Default APR DME/ECU Chip upgrade for the 1985-1991 Porsche 944/951!

Product Page

APR by Dinan DME/ECU Chip Upgrades increase the horsepower and torque of your Porsche by remapping and retuning your vehicle's computer with our performance chip tuning upgrade! Expect a substantial increase in performance with this simple plug and play modification.

Your vehicle is equipped with a Bosch Motronic engine management system sometimes referred to as an Engine Control Unit (ECU), or Digital Motor Electronics (DME). It's essentially a computer that's responsible for controlling various engine control and performance parameters. Parameters related to airflow, fueling, and ignition timing among other things are optimized by our engineering team to increase horsepower and torque. To improve upon the factory calibration, we replace the original chip with our performance chip that has new mapping designed to get the most out of your vehicle. Simply plug and play, run a minimum of 91 (R+M)/2 octane fuel, and enjoy a healthy increase in horsepower and torque. We optimize idle, part throttle, and wide open throttle operation, increased redline on manual transmission vehicles, and optimized fuel economy during light load operation. All of our chip upgrades are emissions friendly, and most applications are CARB compliant.

These upgrades were made in partnership with our sister brand Dinan Engineering. Dinan has professionally tuned engines since the 1970's and throughout history has been a leader in performance across many sectors. Each chip upgrades is unique to the exact ECU/DME model in your vehicle, as well as your vehicle chassis and engine. We have a wide variety of chips that cover a large range of Porsche 911 (Generations: 930, 964, and 993), 924, 944/951, and 968 models. This includes the 4 cylinder engines: 2.5L, 2.7L and 3.0L, turbocharged 4 cylinder 2.5T, and H6 3.2L and 3.6L boxer engines found in various sub models of each model. Please refer to our application guides below for more information, and call to place an order as we'll need to verify your exact ECU/DME combination to determine proper compatibility.

Features:
  • Plug and play chip upgrade
  • Increases horsepower and torque
  • Turbocharge Engine Gains: +65-73 FTLBS and +56-68 HP depending on engine / platform
  • NA Engine Gains: +12-29FTLBS and +10-27HP depending on engine / platform

OK, what about real world fuel economy at highway cruise speed for the '86 951 vs. stock?

There are too many variable to give you an accurate answer on that, but at cruise, customers typically see a little better mileage, especially if you're running a higher octane fuel.

If that's the case, the higher octane fuel may itself be the cause of the better fuel economy: I've discovered over the years that supreme fuel winds up giving better mileage than lesser quality fuel, offsetting the extra cost of supreme. In other words, supreme fuel seems effectively cheaper to use.

That said, have you any data showing improvement in mileage over a given course and distance?

I cannot speak for anything about this particular chip, but in general light-load cruising should not be affected if the tune is decent. My 951 has a larger turbocharger, full 3" exhaust and 800cc fuel injectors with VEMS standalone engine management, and with a nearly stock engine (very mild porting and 5-angle valve job are the only alterations), it gets identical highway MPG as stock (24-25 MPG usually windows open and 75-ish MPH).

The engine will only require a certain amount of fuel during light-load cruising, and if the air/fuel ratio and ignition timing values are correct (stoichiometric or slightly lean for A/F, very advanced ignition timing to light the sparsely distributed mixture), the fuel economy should be the same with all else being equal.

High-load fuel economy is certainly worse, though I will say the bone-stock 951 DME tune errs on the side of pig-rich during sustained WOT to protect the engine. This can be corrected with tunable engine management systems . . .

So about 60 HP just by chipping a 951? That sounds great tbh.

seriously..who is worried about fuel economy in a 35 yr old car…which, gets better mileage than quite a few cars today.

New to the 944 turbo world and looking at upgrade/modification paths. Any using this chip in the real world? I can't seem to find much information about it. What type of modifications will the chip support and/or need?
