M030 has 17mm bores like any other 944 spindle.

What are your thoghts about cutting - shortening -welding the steering arms on the spindle (I understand some are doing this for faster steering). Can it be done in a safe way.....?

I would imagine if you shorten the arms it would only slow down the steering. Give it a think!

regarding the ball joint pins - use high strung 944 arms instead of the other types. They've got a standard sized pin and seem to be holding up well to track work.

No. Shorter arm will give faster steering. But I am not sure if cutting/welding the arms could be done in a safe way...

You are correct. I guess I had too many beers that night! The loads probably are not that high at that joint but.... steering is not something you want to lose control of. I guess if a sleeve could be added to the weld joint so that the joint is not purely relying on a butt weld you'd probably be ok. Tie rod angle will be changing too. I wouldn't do it but I do find the slow lock to lock ratio of the 944 steering annoying too.

Thanks
Mike G.

No.

The spindle setup isn't something I would call reliable these days. Cutting and welding is asking for trouble.

Looks like some are welding (on) them at least.
