I am about to install (when it arrives!) a SFR stage 3 turbo. It is water and oil cooled. I have decided to run it with just oil cooling and block off the water cooling section. I just want to get rid of the pump and hoses etc. I can also use the wrie to input into my link to adjust the fan temp. So... do you think there will be any adverse effects if I let it run for a couple of mins after hard runs or otherwise? Can I just buy a 944 N/A expansion tank and fit that so its cleaner, without the hoses outlets etc? What else should I know?

Andrew, Why do away with water cooling??? If its there, use it. I like the security of hearing my water pump cycles 10-15mines after a hard run using a low temp sensor. Peace of mind. You really have nothing to gain by not running water cooling. Link fan on temp is not really gonna do the same as the turbo cooling systems no matter how you hook it up.

 

I think not using water is a housing that is devoped to be water cooled might be a mistake. DON"T forget to use a oil pressure restrictor

Did the injectors make it yet?

 

No injectors here yet... Getting rid of the water pump and hoses appeals to me. Lees stuff to go wrong and cleans it up a bit. I dont think there is a difference in the construction with respect to the oil section between oil and oil and water turbos. Correct me if I am wrong someone and I will change my plans. Would I have to run an oil pressuer restrictor if I went for oil only cooling? Else I wont need one?

 

Brings up a good point - likely should use an oil restrictor. If you use a turbo timer for 5-10 minutes after hard runs you shouldn't have a problem. Just don't hook up the water cooling section - do not plug it, air needs to be able to get in and out for thermal expansion. You can just fit the NA tank or plug the Turbo tank securely.

I had the SFR stage 2 and ran it without an oil restrictor. I did not have any issues. I am running a KKK 27/6 with just oil cooling but it was designed for that. It spools up quicker then the ones which are also water cooled. I wouldn't use a turbo which was designed for water cooling without it though.

 

People keep saying the turbo was designed for it. Yes it has provision for water cooling. How does it differ in the oil cooling function from that of an oil only cooled turbo? That is the important question I feel.

 

The catch can is for a different issue.

Ask Tim what he suggests on the restrictor.

Where does the restrictor actually sit?
