The only thing I could think of would be the actual size of the center section. The larger center section would have more steel and would hold the heat longer than say a smaller oil based center section. Easier to cook the oil in the bearing since it would hold more heat and for a longer deration. I don't see why if you have it your not installing it. I can see if you live in a hot climate but your from new Zealand. I have bin to many tracks with my car and engine temp was never a problem. Oil is a different story.

The turbo timer issue, oil vs. oil/water aside, isn't it a good idea to take it easy on the car after running it hard anyways? I would think that driving hard, then cruising (not idling) for a bit would be a big factor in cooling the turbo and engine down. Then after shutting off the engine, either a oil or oil/water cooled turbo with a turbo timer or the turbo t-stat/pump would be sufficient.

I want to clean up the engine bay! The plumbing takes up a lot of space. If I dont need it, then why should it be there? Thats my reasoning. So far no one knows if the oil sections are different, only that you should run it if you have got it. On that logic, every turbo should run water cooling. I dont think that is the case. Someone got a scientific reason?

If you delete the water, then you may not want to install an oil restrictor, not much oil going to get thru a .050-.070 hole.

I was not going to install one. Stephen said he didnt and it was fine! This might work out great!

Interesting stuff, however, I just can not see that a small pump and a few water lines is really that much of a price to pay for the peace of mind of cooling the turbo center section after you shut off.

Water cooling=turbo longevity. Why do turbo's in 951's last 180,00 miles (generalization) and turbos in eclipses last 60,000(generalization)? There's multiple threads about this subject already. Certainly something more of a street car issue.

If my turbo lasts 8 years (60K miles) , then I am happy... chances are I will have changed it by then. So what, if I do keep it that long I have to rebuild it?

Look at TonyG's underhood pics, dumping the water cooling cleans it up so much.

Pretty much it is your car and your money (do not take it as an ofense)... If you prefer the looks over the funtionality, fine! That is the beauty of choice.

I prefer the added safety/logenlivity that the water cooling provides... I do not have to remember to keep the car running for a few minutes to allow oil to cool down the turbo nor do I need to add a turbo timer to do it for me... this car came with that from the factory.... quite nice if you ask me.

Me? I am keeping it. If you still decide to not use it, can you sell me the elbow pipe that feeds the water to the turbo?

That's where my issue is with water cooling - you run hard and shut off thinking the water is going to take care of it, but the oil stops flowing in there and still cokes since the water cannot cool that quickly, and most importantly, the oil flow stops.

You can have it for free if I do not use water... longevity, hmmm the difference between 8 and 15 years I could not care about. I dont mind rebuilding/upgrading a turbo every 8 years. Plus I can sell the pump etc and make some cash! Anyone else other than TonyG not running water? TonyG, you like? Also, a turbo timer is like $50. No big deal. I would almost prefer to have my car running while my alarm winds my windows up etc.

NZ951,
It seems ironic that you're
not getting Tech advice
from the vendor whom you
bought the turbo from.
Whether one should run a
restrictor or not or whether
you can obmit water cooling.
This in the first palce should
have been made clear to you
by the vendor whom you trust
who should have the knowledge
& expertise to give you first hand
advice.
