Default Turbo CAM Selection Thoughts?

I'm Curious, As I understand it the NA cam is the way to go for a turbo DE/Track car, Obviously its a "who give a turkey about low end" application because you are always in the upper end of the RPM range. So the question becomes which NA cam to use? Of course I can look up the specs on the different years and judge it from there but I figure I would start with a post in hopes someone here has BTDT.

the early 82-85/1 cam "05R" is exactly the same camshaft as used in the 944T.
the 85/2-88 NA cam "09R" has 1mm more exhaust lift and ~8 degrees more exhaust duration; intake is the same as on the 05R, IIRC.

more duration will get you more high-rpm power, lift is useful if you can fit it but only to a certain extent.

in a turbo car you want minimal overlap because you're just blowing boost out the exhaust valve.

I do not know if they are still in business, but I have one of the Milledge cams. This one to be specific, and I am using the racing sprigs to keep the valves from floating..

My turbo engine is using an 09R n/a cam and it idles great, drives great. 3000-4000 rpm is when engine starts to pull.

sweet Thanks... Now I see that Running a NA cam with allot of boost is not really a good Idea... I have to put a boost gauge in my crossover to see what the back pressure is...

It'll work fine if you have a modern turbo and free flowing intake, exhaust and other mods that reduce exhaust backpressure.

the standard 09R cam will only help your power output, there is still -0- overlap of intake.exhaust valves being open to you're not going to lose any boost.

Use the NA cam and be done with it. Cheap, no other mods required, good power increase. There's no downside!

Sold! LOL..quick question, can I just toss a NA cam in and use my lifters? Im leaning towards getting a whole used cam box and the lifters that came with it..

I don't believe there is that much benefit in using a 944 cam over stock to justify all the work necessary in installing one.

If you dont need smog.

My suggestion is going with a JME cam. Im probably going with 474 lift on the intake and 502 lift on exhaust and Jons magic duration figures. Its his most aggressive hydrolic lifter cam and with no need for heavy duty springs. Probably worth a real 50 hp at equal boost levels on a modified turbo. You will need a larger turbo to take advantage of the flow.
If you want to pass smog go with stock lift and his magic duration figures. Still good for 30-35 hp.

get a MAF/MAP conversion before thinking about cams.
the -09R is worthwhile if you have one cheap and are already "in there" for a belt change or something.

Since the followers get broken in on a specific cam lobe, it's always best to put the lifters on the exact lobe they had been running on. This will greatly extend the life of both components.

My car currently has the Vitesse Stage 2 setup including cam. It has a bit of a choppy idle (which sounds awesome btw) - the car pulls like a train from 3k on. I believe this is a custom grind and the specs are a closely guarded secret-
