Have you seen a factory sleeve?
I came across a factory sleeve that was in race engine #404. I was told it's a race only part. Not sure if the block it went in is any different than what we have as a stock block.

Now I understand (better) the "you're on the right path" comment to vogel's sleeve project. So much for some folk's arguments about wet sleeves being too unsupported. Thanks for the pic.

Russ, There is a missing variable that I'm trying to figure out. Is the block that this sleeve went into similar to the stock ones? I'm betting against exact similarities, but more investigation is needed.

Nice 0-ring groove on the top. Keep us posted.

A few more questions regarding the sleeve:
1. It looks like the upper half is a wet sleeve (exposed to coolant) with the lower half being pressed into the block. On the lower part, what are the two noticeable bands around the circumference that are approx 1/2 inch wide?
2. What type of material is the sleeve? Cast iron? Aluminum? Something else?
Best regards,
Jeff

The Sleeve is Aluminum, it is a wet sleeve. The 2 bands at he bottom portion of the sleeve are of the same material as the rest just a bit larger OD. I'm trying to get info on the block and how it was designed.

The operative words are Race Only.
That's a scary term, which typically is translated into, "we tear down, inspect, and rebuilt these engines too often...."

Another typical translation of race only is, "sustained operation at WOT, full boost, for (5) 30 minute run sessions on a 100F ambient day". Your words. So is a "race only" engine strong or not?

All of the above assumptions for "race" engine are valid. I used the term "race" to indicate it was a "race on;y" part that you could not purchase from your dealer.

If the to bands have greater OD than the rest of the bottom of the liner then these bands will be the only heat transfer path from the bottom of the liner to the block. Why does Porsche want to limit heat transfer from the lower half of the liner? Is it to get a more even heat distribution along the length of the liner? As the heat is generated at the top of the liner a stock liner probably gets quite a bit hotter at the top and therefore becomes conical.

Yes those are words, taken obviously out of context.
There's no reason to use a "race only" term on a product that could withstand everyday use in a normal 951 engine unless there was a potential reliability problem.
If that were not the case, then would it really be "race only"?
Why use the term? Because you can't buy it from a dealer? That's hogwash....
How long to you think a Nascar engine would live in a Chevy Pickup? 100,000 miles?
