Default Darton MID Install Los Angeles Area

Anyone know of a reputable shop in the LA area to do MIDs on a 2.5 block? I know the usual suspects and will probably go with one of them, but maybe there’s someone local so I don’t have to ship.

Thanks!

From the amount of people i've had this conversation with. Chris White is the only person to trust with Darton MID sleves.

If i ever go down this path, he'd be doing my block also.

dry sleeves not big enough?
running errands this morning i came across a machine shop in Ontario that said they can do sleeves for $120/hole installed but they want to see the block before accepting the work.
they also said they could do offset grind but want to see the crank first too.

of course for the first time in 10 years i don't have a bare 944 block to take them, lol

I’m dropping a 3L crank at marine crankshaft this weekend to offset grind to 92mm, so I’ve got that part covered. Starting to think if I want to go 103 bore I should go MID vs dry sleeved, I know that 103 is pushing it.

Chris White is the obvious go to, but looking at the Darton website it seems to say they install them as well, and they are a short drive from me down in Carlsbad, and I would hope they know how to do it. I’m going to give them a call. I’d like to avoid shipping a block if possible.

$120 a hole is super cheap, and I do have two blocks. But I only want to build one motor. 3k in MID or $480 in dry sleeve, hmmmm....

Have they done any Porsche blocks before?

Ha, yeah I saw that 3L crank that Fast951 was selling and snapped it up, decided to bump out to 3L instead of 2.85 since the head and intake being built can handle the flow. Head is being built to 103mm bore size, so exploring MID to handle that.

The biggest issue with the MID sleeve installation is how they are pressed in place. Each one needs to be pressed in individually with a cool/cold block. I had mine pressed in, let the block rest and then pressed them again.

Darton is located in Carlsbad, California, I would seriously consider going there.

Yeah if they do install it seems a no brainer to go there, it’s an hour or so away from me, traffic dependent. They are the source after all.

Someone on here did mention that they had a failure with a block that Darton installed mid sleeves in. One might want to search on here to see what happened. This was a few years ago and I don't recall who.

I’ll try to find that thread, price is reasonable at Darton and close by.

curious why you wouldn't just go the tried and true Alusil method? It's a lot of money to throw down on a MID setup not to mention the risk of failure. Mike is very experienced with Alusil. I heard he did a MID 944 block for the mechanic at Greg Brown's shop Precision Motorwerks.
