Default Max MPH

Anyone know the maximum MPH a stock geared transaxle will handle? This assumes the rev limiter is raised to 7k and governor is deleted.

depends on tire size.
there is no governor, 951 is drag limited (needs more HP to go faster).
iirc by my math with stock size rear tires and stock 951 gearing it should touch around 180-190 with that rpm limit.

Around 184mph at 7k with a stock 951 trans and stock diam. tires, but would need a lot of hp to do that.

I didn't know there was no governor, I assumed there was based on the owners manual stating 152mph for non S turbo. I've personally seen 165 with room for more with 18" wheels.
My question is(assuming you have enough HP) will the transaxle handle speeds of 170+?

Stock motor or modded?

I don’t think it would break the transaxle to get to it’s top speed, but I do think a stock engine and oil system might not last long at 7k. I might be wrong though. I did some math once and I think it was only 350-400 needed to get to the end of the gearbox. I’ve since gone to a S2 Box though since I’d rather get to 150 quicker than push past 170.

Stock motor,3" exhaust, new head gasket, Spec Stage 2+ clutch,Super 48,Dual port,MaxHP Stage III chip, stock AFM with drop in K&N. I don't rev past 6500. I just occasionally feel the need for speed and don't want to damage rear by exceeding limits.

Porsche speedometers are notoriously optimistic. Verify your speedo indication with a GPS, then do the run again...

You won't damage the gearbox, you'll spin the #2 rod bearing thou. Maybe catch the car on fire if the fuel lines are stock, not fun to do that and really not fun when above 120mph. And to go faster you can install a taller fifth gear out of an n/a into a 951 gearbox.

According to owner’s manual with standard tire size at the RPM limiter (6500 rpm) you would reach around 276 km/h or around 172 mph (this is the real GPS speed). To do that you would need more HP at the top of the RPM power band. It would not be advisable to raise the RPM limit to 7000 rpm and stay there for extended period of time (probably there not many roads where you could do that any way). By installing slightly bigger diameter tires in the rear (e.g. 235/50 R16) you would raise the top speed to 180 mph.

With a .7972 fifth gear you could achieve higher top speeds with a lower RPM. I believe at 7000 RPM's with that tall fifth gear in a turbo trans you could reach 199mph. It's due to the fact that the turbo transaxles have a taller differential gear. That would be if the engine had the power to push it that fast. Also going over 180mph is a whole other game. It's recommended to take the car to a wind tunnel for speeds over 180mph.
