You guys really think a 400hp NA 944 engine will be steetable or cheap? Think again.

Swap in another engine or sell it any buy another car.

In other words, its pretty much has to start as a stock 3.0 in one form or another and you go from there depending on how much you dislike your wallet. For what it's worth though, these cars are actually quick with 300hp so anything near that would be respectable.

Maybe we should ask the OP why he's so adverse to a Turbo in the first place...

Digging this FOSSIL up for some real context. I”m a race with PCA and NASA and I’ve done pretty “OK” with my NA making 140WHP (DYNO sheet available). I’ve come into a HUGE amount of parts, and honestly, budget is not a concern so lets cut the bull**** and focus on a real target PROBLEM. I’m in 944Spec, But My car has run in ST6 (18:1 weight/power). I’d love to make either 13.5:1 or 14:1. I can get the car down to 2200#, maybe 2150# I can get me down to 200#. Let’s assume 2425# with driver/fuel/coosuit/2.5 gallons fuel.

HOW do I take a 2.5L motor to 175WHP reliably? OK, AND GO!

I can probably answer your question, but need more info first:
- Does it have to stay 2.5L?
- Who checks your HP, and is it done each race event?
- Are 'stock' engine components required or is your class determined solely on max HP?
Perhaps more simply put, what are the rule limitations in achieving your HP goal?'

So it doesn’t have to Stay 2.5L, But I have a ton of parts form the 2.5L platforms.

We have to submit DynoSheets through their approved shop once every other year and be ready to dyno at any event to verify numbers.

Stock Parts are not required as long as they’re claimed.

Mike does it have to stay SOHC or can you run a 2.5L DOHC without penalty?

OK, so you're going to target a HP to fall into a specific class. Here's some food for thought:
There's power to be made using many of the parts you have. Here's an example. This engine used stock cams, stock intake and TB, stock exhaust. The engine was carefully built, however with key items being properly prepared cylinder head, 3L crank (so displacement became 2.8L), fresh pistons (10.8:1) and a custom chip created on the engine dyno. This engine would give you around 170whp. Note that with a proper exhaust header and performance cams power would be increased significantly. Where do you want to go from here?

I bought out a collection of parts a few days ago that happened to come with a custom cam and head/computer/chip. I’ve got to pull that stuff out once I get the car I purchased with it out of the trailer and cleaned up for a possible customer build.

I’m all ears!! I need to shoot for one of two classes in one or the other groups with NASA. I’ve got 944Spec/SP1 covered with the current car. I’m looking for something that will slot in to Super Touring or German Touring. ST 5 is 14:1, ST4 is 12:1 and ST3 is 10:1. German Touring (GTS2) could be 13.5:1. My current 944 is 2260# with glass hatch. I’m pretty sure I could take this recipe, add the Fiberglass hood/fenders/doors and lexan all around.

Thanks all for comments. I found a solution in a collection of 944 parts I purchased that included a build 2.5 with knife edged polished and lightened crank, JE pistons, and other mods to make the motor perform very well. I plan to run a stand-alone EFI (Possibly megasquirt 3), ditch the AFM, and take advantage of more modern tuning parameters. Goal would be to make something that could meet 13.5:1 in NASA for GTS2 or a similar class. My next move would be to find a donor 944 caged tub to put on a diet.

I’ll start a new thread to follow up this build in the 944Tech section.
