Default Max HP for naturally aspirated 944

Am wondering what maximum horse power can be derived from a non turbo 944. Is it possible to develop 300ish HP?
(These engine blocks look very stout)

I hear crickets. Anyone else? Sorry your just an easy victim. Ok check it out, how much HP out of an NA? Well what's your pocket book look like because the more power you want out of an NA the less $$,$$$ you'll have chasing small horse power gains for big bucks. However to answer your question we would need more information. For example is it a 2v or 4v and 2.5,2.7,2.8,3.0? 968 head if 4v? And what year engine? 88 944 base 2v engine had higher comp pistons then the earlier years. It would best to start with a 968 engine that has 240hp factory. That cost more up front but you'll get more out of it for the $$,$$$ spent.

Okay WTH I'll chime in. Start with the fact that a 2.5 you're good for about 130 horsepower. A 2.7 maybe 145, the 968 motor is where it's at for normally aspirated 240 horsepower and if you've ever drove one it's a pretty nice ride for a streetcar. I believe Michael Mount built a 4 valve motor good for nearly 300 horsepower but that was with carburetors.

I am pretty sure Michael Mounts 3.2L did 325-350hp if I recall correctly on one of his posts on the car.

Yes, but you will need a lot of $$$$$$$ to do that.

S winfrey,

You're right these blocks ARE stout. I'm very slowly converting my NA into 300ish hp by the addition of a Turbo.
The problem is money and expertise. You can punch & stroke & fabricate & customize... I spent $4000 on parts twice (once to add power as an 8 v NA and once to convert to 16 v NA). Then I realized I was stupid and shoulda turbo'd because you will develop so much more torque per dollar.

Thanks everyone for all the input. Looks like my best option is to find a 968 motor...besides PCA and Ebay are there any other places you might look to? Thanks again.

2.5 early 143hp
2.5 late 147 hp
2.5 (1988) like 155?
2.7L 162

there is a good amount of power to be unlocked by deleting the AFM/stock DME, playing with the cam timing or better yet getting a less-mild cam than the beige, bland cam the 944 came with.

I would choose a 968 for sure to start with. And Luis if an LS can fit then a Buick grand national engine could fit right? Those are potent little engines if you don't care to stick with a porsche engine. There's also the Audi I5 some are working on. Then there is THOR. It's all about the $$$$$$$. However the 944's were powerful engine back in their day. If maintained they hold their own pretty well.

If you want 300 hp, sell it and get a turbo, then you have a nice base to start from. stop spending $$$$$$$$ on a n/a that will never be worth anything more than $8k in excellent unmolested mechanics, interior and with pristine original paint condition.

Warning: You'll want to upgrade transmissions while your at it. When Porsche changes an engine they change a lot of things you wouldn't expect them too, example: ecm and ecm harness, flywheel, fuel lines (just to name a few)... Although possible this is going to be expensive & time consuming, but super fun to drive. Best of luck

Guys,
Michael Mount built a 400HP 3.2 for Henk a few years ago.
I have a new car we are building with a MM 3.2 liter 968 NA motor w/ITB's and we are targeting 325-350HP at the rear wheels.
MM had a great post here on Rennlist with the entire Henk 400 HP 3.2 NA Motor build.
Max
