Default Fast spool-up turbo

Hi,

Im looking for a turbo that will have faster spool-up characteristics than the k-26/6 and will be good for 325-350 rwhp. Im not looking for more power up top. Just a "quick on the power" profile. Im not afraid of accomodating this turbo with additional mods. I have already installed a lindsay MAF. lightened the crank, got 55# simmens as well as a mildly reworked head.

Any suggestions very welcome

Thanks

JPR

Unless you have an aftermarket wastegate (not stock modified wastegate) and boost controller... you have no idea how fast and hard a K26/6 can hit.

Have you got these mods yet?

by boost controller do you mean boost enhancer/reliaboost, or something else? (learning...)

I mean a real dual port wastegate and either a manual (black **** type) or electronic boost controller.

Once you do that, you'll see how fast and hard a little K26/6 will hit (it just runs out of air up top...)

I have a dual-port wastegate and manual boost controller and I was never that impressed with the K26. Took a while to spool up and always felt "tired" to me. Especially compared to the T04B hybrid I have on the car now. It spools much faster than the K26, pushes more air, and doesn't run out up top. I keep reading comments about how great the K26 is - was mine just worn out when I got the car? Car only had about 64K on it and was in pretty decent shape in all the other areas.

I second Tony G. When I had the k26/6 is felt kind of sluggish until I installed the Profec B. With the Profec set to full "sharp" the boost hit plenty hard -- even at stocl boost levels. The stock KLR/cycling valve is programmed to roll on the boost. I imagine that is why so many people liked the Boost Enhancer. When I got a bigger turbo, the stock wastegate became an obvious weak link.

If you have no boost leaks, an aftermarket dual port wastegate (not a modified stock wastegate) with a 1 bar spring, and some form of aftermarket boost controller, the boost will hit real hard, especially if you have a test pipe.

I've got a full 3" cat bypass exhaust, an aftermarket dual port, and a MBC - just didn't start to build any boost with the K26 until 3K and didn't get anything over 12 PSI until 3.5K or even 4K. Mine must have been really overdue for a re-build. Anyone running a decent shape or rebuilt K26 care to comment on their boost curve? When do you start building boost and when do you reach 12 or 15 PSI? Just curious since I've always suspected my K26 wasn't performing up to par.

I'm not TonyG... but you can try the Tial 38mm wastegate w/ adapters. MySwiss has a group buy going on now if you look around. It's around $300 including shipping, and the plates to bolt it on.

I've never had a non-laggy 951. Back when it was using Autothority, K26/6, Test pipe, deltagate and AVC-R, it still didn't begin to spool till around 2500rpm. Wasn't getting full boost till about 3200rpm. Maybe it has to do with elevation (3700ft here).

Feels like it spikes hard becuase I (like many others) overboosted the hell out of that K26/6 . But compared to other turbo cars I've driven, it's laggy in spoolup time, and boost onset.

Thanks for your suggestion Tony, I failed to say that I have already installed a turbonetics wastegate and MBC. Im really looking for improved boost response from the turbo, not working around the shortcommings of the k-26.

Thanks

Then you are going to have to fit a small T3 turbo with modified cross over pipes and exhaust pipes.

If you want to go to that trouble, then you could get a turbo that would spooll up real fast (1500 - 2000rpms depending on the trim).

Have SFR build you the pipes for the T3.

Have Turbo-Performance (www.turbo-performance.com) build you a T-3 turbine section .36 a/r with a "standard" trim wheel.

Turbonetics Part Number: 20369-72

or

Garrett Part Number: 430410-0011

Then fit a T04B compressor, "S" trim.

That's a mighty small turbo setup, that will for sure spool up real fast.

Turbo-performance has block off plates that will allow you to use your external wastegate, etc..

Good luck,

TonyG

I keep wondering whether the Reliaboost is considered a "True" MBC. What exactly is the difference between a check-valve type ( The Reliaboost ) and a regular black **** MBC? Any difference in how they hold the boost signal and such?

Thanks,
Sach

Reliaboost / LBE (used with stock / single port wastegate) : Opens once a specified boost pressure is obtained.
regular black **** MBC (used with dual port wastegate): Closes once a specified boost pressure is obtained
