I got all the fun mechanical quirks out of my new toy (85.5 944) and now Im looking into getting my stereo equipment all installed. Im looking for any suggestions on the sub placements. I have 2 Rockford Fosgate 10" HX2 subs and was thinking of ripping out the back seats and having a custom box made. Has anyone had any experiences doing this? Also is there any web sites with the plans / schemeatics of such an Idea?
Also is it possible to put in 6" speakers into the doors? I beleive that it has 4X6 speakers stock, but I have a 3 way Boston Acoustics Component set (6" woofer, 4" mid 1" tweeters) that I would love to have in the 944.
Your biggest ptoblem will be the front speakers. There is only 1 5/8 inches of depth to work with and a standard 4x6 cutout. Some form of spacer would need to be made so that you could mount bigger/deeper speakers in the front door.
We have a single Fosgate 10 sub in a sealed box that is a little over a foot square and sits on the back of the folded down rear seat. A small amp is bolted to that and a 10 CD changer hides under the seatback. Waiting for some new 4x6's to replace the factory units...in the mail...
I have a pritty decent system in my 86 944. for the fronts I installed the best I could find.. and it just turned out to be just about the best money could buy.. I installed S600s Diamond audio Hex's in there. they have the smallest mounting depth requirement. I had to do a bit of handywork to get them in without any noticible spacers. Dynamat,dynamat,dynamat.. it works.. for the rears I got a pair or boston 746 - Plate System ones.. that sound amazing. and can handle the punch I am putting into it. for a sub I build a custom single driver "Diamond audio M6 10" ported enclosure. running 800W at 2ohms. For an amp. I am using a rockford fosgate 800x4. I am finishing of the installation this weekend routing the cables and such. I am really happy with the Diamond audio sub and mids, and dont think (I will ever change.. they do cost a bit more,, but they deliver. just remember to place the sub close to the back corners to get a good bass resonce of the back window. also remember that if you do custom enclosures to follow the manufacturers guidlines for the correct folume needed and also remember that most ported design boxes deliversb most of the bass throught the port and not woofer. so dont opstruct the port output. I am really happy with the sound I have and it does not take away much of the trunk space at all. hope this helps. let me know if you need more info.. technical and such.. gl
Alright rennlist...hear so much about you all over here...thought i'd get my 2 cents in, and provide my resources. Here are some links to some stereo info:

I personally went a little overkill with my front speakers. I installed Infinity Kappa 6.5" seperates in my front speakers... it required me to use a grinder to make a gigantic circular hole, then a little spacer to make the depth not an issue, then to patch the hole from the origional rectangular speakers, I have to re-apolster the doors. The tweeters weren't a problem - fit in just over the window controls. I have a 12" sub in the spare tire well (the volume of which was adjusted correctly, and it was sealed). Then I have my amp on that fold down back seat thing. I was going to cut a nice hole in one of the back seats for the amp, but there was no way to get it to fit correctly. I also have a subwoofer **** installed near the stick (in one of those switch holes). It all looks good - as if it were stock (since most of it is hidden really well). I also got bored and re-wired the "your doors are locked" red light to attach to my alarm so it blinks instead of an unsightly little LED mounted next to it. All in all, pretty trick, and very time consuming to do - but it sounds bitchin.
Our mechanic in Oakland, Bryan at Bauer Porche drives a 944 as well and pointed out that if you want to get around the thin 4x6 door panel restrictions just swap your door panels with some used ones from a 968. They fit fine and give you extra depth and width plus have the built in tweeter hole and will accomodade most current sizes. You lose the map pockets but it will look stock to all but a 944 forum rennlist regular and PCA councours judges. Parts Heaven had a good selection for my 87 944 na that would work but I am waiting to find a pair that are two tone light grey and black to match my interior as closely as possible.
Hmm, you could always create custom door skins. I am in the process of building a massive fiberglass project to fit the rear of my 944, it will house 2 15" MTX subs, a rockford 12" and a 10" as well, I have an alpine MRD-M500 driving the 15's, and another alpine V12 for the 12 and the 10, I am using a Kenwood KAC-645 (I believe) to drive my 6x9's in the back, which are just in cheap-o future shop boxes, and my 4" components on the front, which are mounted on a plate to fit a 4x6" opening, they are a clarion pro-audio, but are old, and I don't have the model number. I am working on some door skins to accomidate a 6 1/2" 3 way component system and a 5" 2 way component system, for 5 speakers in each door, will be entirely custom, and I am moving thewindow controls to the center console (a good move I think, they are difficult to reach), and I may use the door handle off another model Porsche, to make it easier to fit in, I am not sure yet. If you have lots of free time, this is the way to do it =)

I am running all Soundstream speakers and amps - Soundstream Tarantula 4.5 inch component set up front, Soundstream Tarantula 6.5 component set in back, Soundstream DaVinci 10 subs in spare tire well. Powered by Soundstream amps pushing a total of roughly 2000 watts. 100 Farad stiffening cap hidden underneath sub amp (which rests where the rear seats used to be) and a 1 Farad stiffening cap with Digital readout on display.
It slams, but with the quality of the components, the sound is so full and lifelike I'm amazed every time I get in it.
Check out the pics and sign my guestbook while you are there.
Thanks!
