We had a fun drive last night. The more we drive it the more we love it. As we get to know the car better we learn more about it's personality and gremlins.
I was able to have pod lights last night for the first time by fiddling with the dimmer. It could probably use a good cleaning.
When returning from a fairly calm drive last night we heard a very loud buzzing from the rear of the car with the ignition off. I turned the key on and off a couple of times to see if it would go away. It didn't so we went back to the fuel pump and it appeared to be running (loudly). The same noise you get when you just turn the key. I removed the rear ground strap and the noise quit (duh). When I hooked the strap back up it came back on. hmmm. I just unhooked the battery and retired for the evening.
My plan is to pull and inspect the 53 fuel pump relay and figure out whatever fuse goes with that. I have several new and used relays so I hope that replacing the relay will remedy the issue. If not.?.?.? I have no plan.

Quick and easy. I am sure this is like rolling over in the bed for some folks but I will explain for any new guys reading.
With ground removed I removed the fuel pump relay. I temporarily reattached ground and listened for buzz. Nothing. I unhooked the ground and replaced the old relay with another I had laying around. Re attached ground and listened. No sound so I turned the key to the on position. Still no sound.?.?.? The relay that I used as a replacement was of unknown origin. Probably from a parts car or bought second hand with a box of other leftovers from somebody getting out of 928's. I had four more unknown 53 relays so I just used the same procedure on the different ones. I got lucky and on the second relay that I tried the fuel pump whirled right up when I turned the key. I cranked it and let it run for a minute and then shut her down and the fuel pump shut down as normal.
I know I have a couple new relays in a box somewhere but it was easier just using what I had at my fingertips.
All is well that ends well.

So here is a funny story..... well it is funny now. I was delivering the car to the tire shop today after work and my ride was not there yet so I thought I would drive around for a bit before just sitting there waiting for my ride.
The drive to the shop was very short and very low RPM. Driving up to the interstate I decided to get on it a little and got bogged down at about 3000 RPM. This has never happened previously. I had already committed to the path I was on and the issue got progressively worse. There was a soft buzzing from the fuse panel all during the drive. (new noise) I ended up making it back to the tire shop but mainly in 4th and 5th gear. In any smaller gear there was lots of lurching and thrusting. Not very fun.
Any thoughts? Of course now I will dig out the new 53 relays that I have and probably swap that out in the tire shop parking lot before coming home.
I will be very nervous if the buzzing is still there with the new relay.

In all of the removing of the ground strap I noticed it is old and probably original.
Normally one of the first things I do with a new driver.
I am on my way to the local TSC to find a flat ground strap.
Any ideas on why the new relay is buzzing?

So I have four new tires, a fresh oil change and have ordered a new fuel pump, fuel filter and j tube. She should be ready for a good ride this weekend.

So the reason for replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter and J shaped brass fuel line was two fold. I had severe hesitation and surging but it seemed to be related to a buzzing fuel pump relay.
I have only put a few miles on her since the job however I did make several high RPM runs during that time. She performed like a champ. The buzzing, however, is still there. Not sure what that means.
Any ideas?

I have not "solved" the buzzing relay problem, but we will be driving the 82 to SITM.
I drove her yesterday for quite a bit(25 miles..?.?.?) and had very even and steady performance. Great acceleration for the full RPM range. I would say that was the first time that I really drove the car and I was not disappointed.
The buzzing seems to disappear at 3000 RPM and then re appear with higher or lower RPM. That fact is very consistent and easy to reproduce. Maybe you can help me figure out what that means or if it is even important.
Replacing the fuel pump and filter has solved, at least temporarily any surging fuel issues.
Trey Phillips and his wife will be driving from Shelbyville to Chattanooga on Friday 6/2 and we will be traveling with Larry and Joann in a three car caravan through Cleveland, Murphy, Andrews, Asheville, Banner Elk. That route will take us through three gorges and a small amount of the BRP at the end.
