Exhaust sound enhancement question - 91 928 GT
Newbie here, the PO of my 91 GT had removed catalytic converter and removed the rear muffler in favor of what appears to be a the 928 International muffler bypass pipes. Surprisingly I don't really think I hear enough of the V8 at idle. It sounds better under load, but think it could sound better and be a little louder. I test drove a 91 928 with headers and straight pipes and it was obnoxiously loud and I don't want that extreme of a sound. Are there a couple options to make my car sound better?

The simplest mod to "improve" the sound is the RMB and you have that but it does nothing worth talking about performance wise.
If you seek any performance increase the obvious route is to remove the front silencer and install an x-pipe but if you do that you need the resonator and the rear silencer otherwise it gets obnoxious both inside the car and externally.
Porsche did a pretty good job on the exhaust system and trying to improve on it is not an easy task and for sure not a cheap one. There are options available from our main vendors that you might research. I took a personal recommendation and had mine built locally wherein I use an x-pipe [from Louie], a modified mid section in which I removed the stock resonator and welded in a Bullett muffler and then have the RMB on the tail section. The sound is awesome- just about tolerable in the cabin and I feel it offers some useful performance gain but nothing spectacular- just wish I could back that up with dyno runs.

I have a RMB and at idle it sounds great, at full throttle more so... I hve several stories I could tell just based on the sound the car makes.
91's may have more sound insulation than the 89, but I have had people literally come over to see what was making that sound, with the car just idling.
If your cam timing is not correct in can be a serious detriment to both the sound and power of the engine.
Attend a 928 event somewhere listen to the cars duplicate the system on the one you like the most.

Thanks guys, this is great advice. I will drop you a line before I make any decisions. My car goes in to Greg Brown at Precision next week for something else and have him listen to my RMB.

Ask Greg about his custom system. I have it and it's the best money I spent so far. Its loud enough but doesn't drone. It also comes with a custom tune so you will see some gains as well. It really woke up my 90 GT.
That said it may be too quiet for you. Mine also came with an RMB and I traded it for stock after driving a few long distances. The drone was too much. Now its just right.

Also, on my 90 GT I have the stainless steel 928 International RMB. I like it and have taken some long road trips. But I admit that I have to put cotton in my ears because of the highway droning. It's great to drive around town in and at lower speeds the V8 sounds very good I think. Sounds fine at idle too. But sound is an opinion thing.
Probably the overall best improvement is indeed GB's exhaust system. It actually improves the performance I hear. I keep mulling it over in my head but haven't really wanted to pull the trigger yet. No idea what it would mean $$$$-wise...
