I would also be interested in hearing when the tow eye tap is back in the US, and to be added to the list of borrowers. The latest discussion of the tap on the 928 OC forum appears to be several years ago.

Talking to Carl, their tow hooks speak of a finer thread than ours,l which I suspect is 911 specific, and would not fit a 928 - both pour models are 8 tpi Imperial threads, known as Knuckle.

Borrowed tow eye tap and drill from CraigL.
Proceeded gently with instructions collected in threads. Kept tap and drill lubricated with WD-40. Alternated between brief drilling to remove aluminum debris and 1/4 turn with tap to remove aluminum in threads.
Mission complete; pictures below. Shipping tap and drill back to CraigL this coming Monday.
Tap and drill borrowed from CraigL
Front tow eye socket with aluminum debris from PO drilling.
aluminum debris coming out
small debris from drilling, bigger chunks from tap
just some more cleanup around the edges
New tow eye screws in just fine, and works, have test towed the car with it.

Not sure when the change occurred -I thought for S4 in 86/87. Early cars have a thread 15mm OD (actually 14.28mm, 9/16") and 8 threads/inch. Later models, with the receiver accessible through the front grille rather than a bumper plug, are 20mm OD(actually 0.8") and also 8 tpi. As I said above, and many times previously, these are known as 'Knuckle' threads.
The parts are
928.722.101.03 15x1/8
928.722.101.05 20x1/8
on page 001.00 of PET7 both part numbers appear, with no indication of MY used on.
Page 801-05 in PET (front body panels) shows only the .05 part no as towing hook ("up to 83"), which is wrong, as this is the 20mm thread. This error goes all the way back to the 78 MY

So, Roger, the question is, were the S bodies made with the small thread(15mm) to 83, and then from 84, the large thread(20mm), under a cover plug in the bumper? Implies two base body changes, one in 84, one in 87 for the thread changes?
Pet shows the small thread alone until 82 (in page 001-00), and from 83 to 86 shows both sizes and part nos.
As above, page 801-05 incorrectly calls up the .05 large thread number from 78 to 86, when it disappears from that page
In 86 both part nos and sizes are listed on 001-00, from 87 on only the large thread item is listed.
Anybody with an 84-85-86 and the 20mm thread under the plug ?
1984 five speed. So which size hook do I have? I have two tool kits and two different diameter hooks. I see conflicting opinions about the sizes of early car tow hooks. Being that the temps are still low, I am not trying to break my body plugs to find out right now.
Walstar, see which one fits and advise - large or small. Roger says large, my bet is small. Either end, they should both be the same size - if they re not, some people are in a lot of trouble! And please verify that the front hole is under the right side bumper plug, not visible through the grille.
jp 83 Euro S AT 57k , small thread
Rear hole is up above rear licence plate, in centre, angled upwards. Rarely a problem, as not much water gets up there.
Is front hole large or small thread is the burning question at the moment!
