Regarding the tow hook, have you looked into steel inserts if the threads are messed up as you describe, might be able to recover the use of the tow hook.

No affiliation, there are other inserts available. Just a thought.
I've been looking at these ezlok inserts, but what I'm not sure about is which tow eye to use them with if I did successfully install a thread repair. I believe the thread on the S4 tow eye is 0.8", 0.125" thread pitch. None of the EZloks have this spec internal thread, so I would need to find another tow eye whose thread fitted the internal thread of the EZlok fitting the tube! What would work if I went down the insert route, EZlok or some other?

The sizing is based on supplying lots of hooks over the last 15 years. If we supplied an early style for an 84, 85 or 86 and it did not fit I am pretty sure the customer would have let us know.
Happy to be educated.

Well, I am pleased to announce that I have a BIG one (threaded tow hook, that is) that fits my 84 USA.

Default tap and drill for tow hook

Does anybody have the specs for the drill and tap? @CraigL And just to confirm this tap is for the larger thread version tow hook?

Proceeded gently with instructions collected in threads. Kept tap and drill lubricated with WD-40. Alternated between brief drilling to remove aluminum debris and 1/4 turn with tap to remove aluminum in threads.
Mission complete; pictures below. Shipping tap and drill back to CraigL this coming Monday.
