Cool How do I recolor bumper trim?

I am in the process of doing a repaint on my 81' 928. I am in need of advice. What should I use to restore the black plastic / rubber strips that run between the front bumper cover and fenders. They are kind of faded and discolored. Also there is a similar strip at the rear between the quarter panels and the plastic bumper cover / rear of car. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Jim,

Just went through this on my 931. I used Prep-All and fine steel wool to bring the black back. I have also heard that Goo Gone works as well.

You may not believe this , but I used a permanent black magic marker for a quick re-black of the faded material between the front bumper cover and fender/hood, and it also worked on the sunroof seal.
It didn't work well on the window trim, which I will re-spray black.

Those bumper beads are cheap as dirt - replace them while you have the bumper covers off!

You're stripping the car before the repaint, right?

I agree with Nicole, they are too cheap to spend time on the old ones.

If you haven't taken the bumpers off, consider it. You'll never get all the old schmoo that's down in the cracks and the new paint will tend to chip and peel there. The bumpers can be re-mounted (and shimmed out slightly) for painting then carefully removed to staple the new strips back on. ( find SS staples or a way to seal plain steel ones so they can't rust)

Thanks for the advice. Nicole, yes I am stripping the car, but only down to the original factory finish that is under a previous el-cheapo repaint. If I remove the stapled on "beads" how in the world do I re staple them on. Do body shops have the tools for this job?

Standard homeowner type HD manual or elect staplegun should do, both parts are just soft plastic. If you don't have a staple gun already, the one Sears sells that look like the handle is backwards works well around the hose & shoots small pins (brads?) too.

Stainless Steel Staples? They must be available somewhere on the internet...

There is the product, available at autozone, called Back to Black. I beleive its made by Macguires. It restores all rubber trim and moldings. This stuff is like Magic, works really well, especially on rear spoilers.

I found that the product "Black Chrome" works wonders. I know it's available at Kragens. It's like magic on all black items, plastic (hard and soft) and painted black metal. The stuff is awesome!
