A garage is the ultimate automotive accessory. You can maintain a decent shark with a carport and a good cover, I suspect.

I like to prepare my car for my typical severa-weeks long sit by washing and waxing it. As a result, it sits with NO contact from a cover or from the sun for all those days. This is probably why my car isn't "aging"-

You need to decide which hobby you prefer, I guess: Music vs. Porsche.....what's it going to be?

Well, since you don't have to worry about freezing temps, maybe you could get a car port with sides.

I mean there are those steel buildings. IIRC, adding sides isn't much more than just buying a car port. You've already got to buy the basic frame.

Add a door, and then you'd never have to worry about the wind or the sun, or the rain, or the nationhood kids. About the only thing you would have to worry about is if it got really cold, steel doesn’t protect against cold well.

It's worth a look anyways.

gretzky99,

Garage without a doubt!!! Will it survive under the carport…sure…but not as well as it will in the garage. In garage, it’ll never get dirty per say aside from a small dusting, no chance of sun period, no fallout from the sky and the ease of knowing it’s locked up safe inside plus, I don’t like using a car cover any more then necessary…kind of like using a condom all the time I guess…plus you run the risk of dust getting in between the cover and the car…not good…however, will it survive outside in the COLD California winter…sure it will but you’ll feel guilty. I say find a compromise as I tried this method and inside simply works the best.

God it’s good to be back…where you guys been!!!

Funny you'd ask. Here's what I've been doing this week. In preparation for the GT that appears to be arriving after I DIE, I've taken the concrete pad that was here when I bought the place, and am turning it into a one car garage. The same can be done to a car port. And no, a car port just won't cut it. Not for you nor the car. If you work, you probably spend evenings in the garage. An enclosed garage is nicer.
Let's see if my time lapse is working...
First, the pad. 9 by 22 feet. Poured by cowboys, who should stick to cows. Complete with peacock footprints. Coulda been giant chickens, I dunno.

Well, since I am too lazy to upload to my website, I'll just post the remaining pictures in followup posts.

Car cover + wind = scratched/worn paint. I don't care how meticulously you dust the car off before putting on the cover, the cover will wear away the wax, and then the paint in the wind. This happens on the parts where the cover is tightest against the paint. The only way to circumvent this is to wax the car A LOT during windy periods. I have a beautiful paint job on my Karmann Ghia that I must stay on top of regularly since it sits outside with a cover on (928 gets to stay in the garage ).

A bunch of siding.
And I still don't have the car to put in it. HEY, where's my GT?!!!! (I even harrassed Tom Falkenburg at the track after he got to drive his new Tilo for the first time. But I'll let him tell his own story.) And the rollup door is looking like a customizing nightmare. I have to cut it down, and do a bunch of fancy custom hardware to get it to fit into the opening. Sheesh, nobody told me I had to have "headroom".

9' Wide is just --barely-- wide enough to park the car and open one door to get in and out. So, no workin' on the car unless it's backed in, and the nose is sticking outside.

Still a whole lot better than an open carport.

Gret--

Biggest killer of car finishes is the sun. A carport will keep the direct overhead sunlight off, and most of the rain. If you want to keep the car nice, enclose the carport and add a door. Poor second choice is a sunproof car cover setup. That might be a standard cover, with one of those silvered tarp things draped over the whole mess. That's how we keep our water toys halfway decent from season to season. I want to stress the 'halfway' part of this, since there's still plenty of cleanup to do on them for each outing, even double covered.

My new garage has windows in one wall (the north) and windows in the door (west facing). Both sets of windows will get UV tint. The ones in the wall will probably get opaque vertical blinds too. The car is covered in the garage almost all the time. If you want your black to stay black, this is the way to do it. I hope...
