Default Towing a 928 backwards - illegal, dumb or better?

I need to tow a 928 over 1300 miles. It hasn't been driven in a while so I'm not going to drive it onto the trailer.

It's currently parked such that I'd most directly get it onto the trailer backwards. I can turn it around, but are there reasons not to tow it backwards? E.g., illegal?

I know I need to keep the weight at the tow hitch under 500 lbs, but the 928 is close to 50/50 weight distributed, so backwards/forward may not matter.

Is there a good place to hook up a winch at the rear?

The towing lug screws in above rear license plate so you can get the car winched up onto a flatbed. No being towed.

All you need to do is make sure you have the proper amount of tongue weight on the trailer.

Neither your tow car, the trailer, or the 928 will know it is on the trailer backwards....unless you tell them.

Have towed backwards without any issues. Much easier if you install tow hooks out back. T

I did 1600 miles and at least six states with the 83S backwards on the UHaul trailer. Worked fine and no problems with The Man.

It's easier to get the doors open and shut in that configuration.

While you're towing it backwards, maybe leave the transmission in Reverse, to ease the car's existential angst.

I need to tow it in about three weeks, and I've never towed before. I need to winch it on or find people to help push it on, and I'll either rent or buy a trailer.

77tony, which size Featherlite is that? I'm wondering what's the smallest size Featherlite 3110 I could use. 17 feet? It might fit the 14 footer but I'm concerned about tongue weight.

If it doesn't have spoilers, it may have less drag being towed backwards. But you'll get a lot of lift!

Key to towing is having a slight weight over the tow ball as Greg said, the car must be positioned on the trailer such that it has small amount of weight distribution to the front - if the weight is to the rear of the trailer and lifting the tow ball then that is when the trailer starts to sway and starts an uncontrollable motion that eventually spins both you and the trailer off the road.
Most of the 911's we race against are loaded backwards on the trailer as the rear engine makes the car rear heavy - lucky the 928 has even weight distribution so you should be able to load it backwards, just watch where you position it, not too far forward either.

Clearly, lots of people have had success towing it backwards. However, I worry about any lift that may be generated across the back hatch. That system is designed for positive pressure. Would not take much lift/negative pressure to pop it open and cause mayhem. Maybe some type of strap across the hatch ( with appropriate padding) just for peace of mind?

Just a WAG, but my guess is the turbulence at the rear of the towing vehicle really eliminates the possibility of lift caused by the 928's shape, forwards or backwards. So I don't think it makes much difference. Lot easier to load though, backing on to it.
