I received James' surround yesterday. Unfortunately it was only the bottom two thirds (A PO cut off the top for an aftermarket radio). In addition it's pretty beat up so it won't make a good candidate for the laser scan I planned to do on it it. Good news is James gave me the thumb up to dissect it to see how it is constructed. This will be very useful in producing a new part with the same structural integrity.

So if anyone has a trim piece that is in good condition that they are willing to contribute for the cause, shoot me a PM. I will only need for about a week then can send it back.

I really hope this project gets fully executed as these are almost always hacked.

As far as "structural integrity" I believe you can and should exceed the factory structural integrity. I've considered making these then quickly realized I had no business doing it. From what I remember they did not need to flex to get in and out of position, although flexing them makes them easier to remove and install. The reason a lot of these don't fit right is the wire has been bent by ham fisted removal. I also never saw a need for the foam..the original foam is so dense and in such small quantity that the vinyl glued to it never really had a "soft" feel...so a product with the right shape, the right texture, and the right color black that is rock-rigid would probably be better than original.

I know I could use at least three of them right now.

I'm in and I believe I have original samples of both - one hole and three hole.
I will go and dig around and get back to you.

Nate - I would prefer they would not be cut up or damaged.
If that works I will send you one of each.

No worries Roger! These will be laser scanned. I have James piece to cut up. Please send me the nicest of the bunch since they will be the template that the new ones will be based off of.

That's all good to know. What about the foam triangle flanges on the bottom. If those were rigid would it hinder installation of have some other negative effect?

This thread makes me feel guilty about using a perfect unmolested piece of 78 trim to hold tweeters in my 81

The entire piece could be rigid and it would not affect installation or appearance. As long as the grain and slight bevels are there, you should be good. Thanks for taking this on!

Nate -

Thanks for being such a great asset to the community. Many are already there and contributing such as this, and I hope that as I learn more about the car I'll be able to contribute back as well - thanks for being part of the inspiration.

That's probably the most efficient way to get them back to Texas anyway.

Good deal. The material I am considering making these from will have some slight flex but much stiffer than foam.

Thanks Scott! I'm glad I can put my knowledge and background in 3D manufacturing to good use here.

I am also a part of the GT6 and FJ40 community and the folks there love their cars as well. But the level of commitment and strive to keep the 928s on the road has thoroughly impressed me. I find that even if you have a question and post it you have contributed because it spawns a thread that others can reference to solve a similar problem.
