That looks to be a common problem as the adhesive dries up and the foam expands pushing the vinyl off. I hope to be able to make these so that I don't need to wrap it in vinyl but at the same time still maintain the vinyl texture.
When you get to this point, I am in for at least one. And I think there is a market for people who do not like the digital clock, but balk at the GTS style square analog replacement ( or just like the round style better, like me)

I stopped by my friend's place yesterday. He borrowed a laser scanner from work so we can get the trim surround geometry into CAD. Once digitized I will be able to correct any of the minor deformations in Roger's parts so that I will have perfect digital masters. From here the next step will be to create some prototype 3D prints.
BTW, Has anyone thought of accommodating one that fits a leather wrapped main console? It needs to be about 2-3 mm narrower on each side with no difference on the top or bottom.

I am in for two '79 versions (3 hole).
I am still in the CAD development stage on this one. The parts I am borrowing from Roger are in very good condition however they are not perfect. So I am taking the scan data now and creating an ideal geometry for the 3D printed prototype. Once that is finished I'll have it check fit and make any adjustments necessary. A master 3D printed part will then be used to create a master mold for both styles (1 and 3 hole).
Unfortunately I have day job and I do this for fun. I say unfortunately because I really enjoy these kinds of projects and wish I had more time to devote to them. One day maybe, and maybe sooner than later. My guess is that it'll be about 6 months until I have this all perfected. My short term goal is to have one of these ready to show some of the folks going to PVGP in July and get their feedback.
In the meantime I'll be posting updates as this progresses.

This can be done. It'll likely take a dedicated mold, but the first step would be to make a 3D printed test part to check the fit. I am concentrating on the standard 1 and 3 hole first but should be able to work a fit check part in along with that.
So educate me a bit on this. What trim piece is currently fit inside a leather wrapped console?
