Nate,
I am also interested in any news on this project. I am currently using the Continental radio which does fit the old-style space on my '81 but my console trim is in pretty poor shape.
I would also be interested in a customization of the lower trim for the '83 (918 552 047 09) that features a round rather than rectangular clock hole (as long as the round hole lines up properly with the console clock mount.) This should allow me to use a more modern radio style. I am interested in the potential here because I am really not very happy with the Continental radio.
Is your plan to 3D print the interior of this object and then apply vinyl over it? For my usage, I expect that just a matt black plastic finish that isn't too grainy would probably be more than acceptable. I'm not building a show car here, I just don't want this trim piece to be the ugliest thing in my interior.
Thanks!

As far as customization for the center trim surround, that is possible, but I will be concentrating on the OEM configurations first. The plan is to recreate the vinyl-like texture with the reproduction part. Unfortunately (for me) 3D printing will not be able to recreate that effect. I have been experimenting with various resin molding techniques and am encouraged with the results. More to come.

I'm working on a second prototype trim piece in Balsa wood. the first was too thick and the perforated leather i used to cover it was too thick as well. this time I have Triangular stock for the rails and a wide piece, 1/4" thick for the center portion, which for Lili needs three round holes.
We'll see how it works out.

I don't blame your skepticism. I thought I would have these done over a year ago. This is not my business or job. I do these projects with the intent to help the 928 community. And I enjoy the engineering challenge they present. Other than some donor parts for reverse engineering, nobody's time or money but my own has been invested. I won't say when I will have parts ready, because I honestly don't know. Just know I am committed to finishing this and developing a replacement surround worthy on installing in any 928, from the daily driver examples to show pony's.
