I bought the Harbor Freight 2 ton after purchasing the 1 ton and returning it because the lift arm was too short. I pulled the engine from the DS because it it is easier than head on because the distance from the front doesn't give you much if any wiggle room.

^^^^^Absolutely true^^^^
Price difference is not great enough to justify buying the smaller one. However, the V-shaped legs will make bolting it directly onto an engine stand difficult. I made a wooden temp engine stand for this reason.

I was looking at the 1 ton from Harbor Freight. They were out. Good thing, if the arm isn't long enough. Thanks fellas.

Yeah the 1 ton does not reach. Also, if you must buy the HF lift, make sure you pamper it and keep the lifting cylinder down and stored inside. It is just unplated/untreated steel and will corrode if left exposed to the air for any length of time.

I still have your old one, haven't pampered, still works, but I do store it arm down.

Before buying any of these, check with local owners many are VERY happy to loan them out for even extended periods of time.

Went with the overhead crane/winch instead, I believe it will lift 1400 lbs. and takes up no room while not in use.

Pulled the engine out of the silver rover with no problem. It takes a bit of work strenghtening the rafters, but three 4X4's and some fasteners took care of that. Made an extra bracket that allows the crane to move side to side on rollers.

I bought the 2 ton and it's arm is a tad short for a 928 pull.
Lifting from the side is a good idea though.
