Most people who visit a forum like this don't post, for different reasons. They might be shy. They might have posted elsewhere and gotten slapped by a curmudgeon who let them know they're stupid.
Nearly all new members of this or any forum are "stupid" regarding the subject of the forum. Nearly all established members will be tempted to give condescending or sharp remarks to a "stupid" question. But they don't do it here - something I am very grateful for since I am still stupid about these cars. I do not have a thick skin.
I'm talking about how new members are treated, not the immediate examples, but I think this comes from the general tone of our forum. This tone may be due to our cars, which make us all feel stupid from time to time (does your hatch release work?). Perhaps it is just a fluke. Or that many of us have met, removing the anonymity effect behind road rage, and forum rage. Perhaps it is because the moderators have been effective, sending messages that we are to treat each other as we would face-to-face.
Whatever the cause, I like it. It's good for the cars, too.
Peace.

FREE KIBORT!!
LOL.
So far, I don't have anyone on Ignore. Wouldn't want to miss a thing on this forum. Also, I have to say that this is one forum where most SPAMBOTS and the like get weeded out quickly. Thank the moderators for keeping the robot trolls out of rennlist.

Rennlist is not a mere storage facility where you throw items into a space; this site is a community that has often been compared to a bar or coffee shop where people gather to talk. Like any private establishment, there are house rules. Play nice and show civility, and you are welcome to stay. Cause repeated ruckuses and you will be given warnings before you are thrown out. Sometimes the ejections are permanent, sometimes they are temporary.
As Gretch stated, Rennlist is not a democracy and mods like Hacker make judgment calls that are designed to balance the overall health and happiness of the community. This means that some parties may not like actions that are taken. One of the requirements to be a mod is to have a fairly thick skin, a trait that serves well in all walks of life.
The moderators take vacations and bannings very seriously. There is also a great deal of accountability with extraordinary moderator actions to ensure that there is a level of parity and to prevent a lone moderator from acting egregiously.
Lastly, the Rennlist Charter has always stated this:

Lastly, the Rennlist Charter has always stated this:
The list administrator(s) reserve the right to unsubscribe and ban members who act in an intentionally inflammatory, fraudulent, libelous, defamatory, racist or demeaning manner, or in a manner inconsistent with this charter, using any Rennlist system or message communication technology. Further, no private communications can be posted publicly, without the permission of the party that send you that private e-mail/message, as these are typically used to incite Flame wars. It is not our intent to stifle communications, but to insure that free and open communications can take place.

This topic comes up once in a while on the board. I think the level of moderation is about right. Using a clear example the fact the I haven't been given a little vacation, even after baiting Hacker and posting negative comments about the 928 and it's value is representative of the fairness doctrine here. Certainly others bemoan my posts, and disagree with me quite eloquently, I'm still allowed to spout my nonsense(accurate tho it may be) without fear of retribution. I did get a warning message a few years ago, but I can't recall what the kerfuffle was about.
The mods active on here have been around enough to know when a thread is destined for greatness, and when one is a grenade with the pin coming loose. We are under the "water cooled TECHNICAL discussion areas" subheading, so I guess if they wanted, anything that was not purely tech in nature could be deep 6-ed. Like this thread, for example.

For sure, the moderators are great guys and do a good, rarely thanked job, although I would never call Gretch "moderate". That might get me banned.

I thought the shut down of the 'bad sale' thread was a Good Idea. About the only negative experience I've had here was with one of the contenders in that. My experience didn't cause me any damage and I didn't escalate, but not everyone is me.
As far as Mark Kibort getting a time out, I have no opinion on that. I don't see a lot of Mark in the threads I'm in, the things I've seen from him haven't affected me emotionally, but he's not someone I look for on a daily basis.
In the end, this is just an internet forum, and it's not expensive to join. So, if you get banninated - even for life - you're only out the few remaining dollars on your subscription and you can always find another forum to play in. Even if you're primarily here to learn - like me - you can do that without signing in as long as you don't mind ignoring the ads.
Speaking of which: I pay for a subscription. Why do I get ads at all? Hmm...

Like others have said, the 928 forum is one of the most down to earth forums out there. I frequent here and in the Canadian forum and its apples and oranges between the two. Love the 928 brotherhood.
Now everyone, give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Mods and users alike.

Damn, off the list for a few days, and all hell breaks loose! Well, cars are getting ready for storage now, and folks will get bored, so the drama quotient will start to rise. It is cheap entertainment, and I usually enjoy watching (sort of).
Anyway, hats off to Erik, Gretch and formerly Randy - that's a job I would not want, and they balance a fine line for the most part.
Now, off to history to see what Kibort did this time

In a previous life, I was active moderator for a usenet forum. It was fun for the first week or so after we founded it, then it got to be work and took more and more time. Mods here get to evaluate posts and threads after they've been up for the world to see. Imagine being moderator and censor/editor for messages in advance of posting. Of course there were more than few posters who were a tiny bit peeved when their messages were toned down or never got posted at all. I'd remind those and other folks that they were always welcome to start their own group and invest their own time and money in the necessary hardware and software. That same idea holds true today. If you don't like this sandbox, buy your own patch, dig it out, fill it with the kind of sand you like, and invite folks to come and play. The first time somebody pees or craps in your sandbox of course, you'll start to get a feel for how mods here get it done when necessary.
Keep it clean, friendly or at least civil, have fun, build sandcastles or whatever, don't throw sand, pee or poop in the sandbox, and you'll be golden. How much easier can it be?

Ed,
Mark's thread about overheating appears to have been at the epicentre as it were.

Mark isn't banned. I noticed when this thread started that his status wasn't "banned" (which is what usually happens) and, more than that, he's posting elsewhere on Rennlist.
