Default odometer gear

Another thread on this issue - yesterday, my speedometer died, as did the odometer (MY 85). I have searched and studied threads, and there is a lot of good information here on the list and elsewhere. I have begun to diagnose the speedometer issue, and will test at the connector in the spare tire well, and work forward from there. One thing I could not find info on -

Here's my question - the odometer failing at the exact same instant seems more than coincidence - I do not believe it is the gear, since I reset it back to zero. If the gear crumbled as they do, I would not have been able to reset as the numbers would not have moved? Is this a correct assumption?

Does the odometer work off the same electrical pulse as the speedometer?

Yes same pulse.

I would say it's electrical. Either the connection you mentioned next to spare wheel or connections in pod. Or it could be a failed pulse sensor but I would start with the connectors.

I had the speedometer that would occasionally stop working when I hit a bump, after I replaced the odometer gear. Turned out that it was simply the connecters which you hook up to the pod. There is a bit op play on them, you can try moving them a bit as you are driving, you'll quickly notice if that's the issue. In my case it was the connecter at the bottom right, which you can easily reach without taking anything apart, except for a cover maybe.

Broke my odometer gear last month, while pushing...what I thought to be fog light switch...odometer immediately quit, but speedo still works. So, the life of another low mileage 928 is in the works...lol.

No, actually the gear showed up last week, from Roger, and the cool COTY key chain, so the repair will be made soon enough.

Seems like your problem is an electrical connection or sender, if both aren't working.

Good luck, with your repair.

Brian.

My red car (86.5 da burn victim) has a similar issue. ODO stopped just prior to the engine being rebuilt. The is a suspect yellow wire under the dash on the left of the steering column that was loose. The PO was doing something with it and now I am wondering if it's related to the reset ODO switch. The speedo works fine.
BTW the damage on the red car is believe or not very fixable and I will get out of it without a "branded title"

That's good Van - no branded title is a biggie. Yours sounds like the classic gear though, since your speedometer still works.

I tested the sensor via the harness today, and got the repeating beep and ohm reading as the wheel was turned. Therefore, I guess I'm heading into the pod for the rivet repair.

I did the "rivet repair," and my once-intermittent speedometer is now a completely non-functional speedometer. As an added bonus, while I was in there I fixed the shattered odometer gear, but it doesn't matter, because now none of it works. I'd suspect the sensor, since both are dead, but I didn't mess with that...so I must have fried something on the circuit board.

Please identify left and right, sitting in front of pod?
I have similar issues, speedometer works but odometer stopped.
Any photos of connector, wires?

Just in case anyone else runs into this. I changed my gear when my odo died, and re-shimmed etc, and neither fixed it. It ended up being my electric "motor" on the unit. I sent it out and had it back in a week and works perfect ever since. Sent to Cory at Specialty Gauges. 703-402-4008

Pictures and details are in these threads (there are more threads on this - lots written about it altho none had answered my original question here):

Mystery solved. Took everything apart, and you can see the fried capacitor (or whatever it is). Not sure what caused it, but I am doing a full R&R on the instrument cluster, including the film. Will not solder though, as everything looks very good on the film at the rivets and elsewhere. Also, as another data point, my odo gear is not broken and does not feel brittle.

Now where to send this for repair? I see Matt recommended Specialty Gauges, but I cannot find it online anywhere. Where are the good places to get these things repaired? I will have them do the odo gear as a preventative measure, as I do not want to go back in once I put it all back together.

Here's the damage:

Does anybody know what size that little diode is? What is it so that I can spec it out properly?
