Default Clicking noise

I have a 1980 928 and I was letting it idle and it sounded fine. All of a sudden I hear this ticking noise coming from the engine. i get this ticking noise all the time now. Would anyone know what it is and how to get rid of it? Also, what do I need and how do I get rid of the smog pump? For my year of car, do I need one of those electric fans or can I just remove the smog pump and not have to do anything else? I don't have cats in the car so I am just going to take out this pump. Also, if I remove it, do I have to plug any holes or anything after it is out? Thanks.

Yeah, I have a ticking noise in my engine also. Mine is an '85, but maybe it's the same thing. Doesn't seem to be a problem, but I guess it could be.

It is most likely the injectors doing their job. I think EVERY 928 newbie (including myself) has had this concern when under the hood for one of the first times!!

You can get a long handled screwdrive (poor man's automotive stethoscope), put one end to various spots on the engine and the other against your ear and listen.

the thing is that the car sounded fine and then all of a sudden while it was ideling there was a noticeable ticking noise. That shouldn't be normal for the injectors to be doing that since it was running quieter before, should it?

I had that happen before. Search the archive to gain more info. It went away thankgod. Now I have 'cricket' churping sound usually after I start it and warms up. Johnny928 look forward to that.

Watch Mark will say "thats because you have crickets living in your intake tubes and you start the car and it pisses them off'.

But really if injectors cause ticking, what causes the cricket sound?

Spray some water mist on your belts while it's chirping and if it stops, it's a belt. If not, maybe a pulley or bearing.

I will just search the forum to find other info about this. I just think it makes the car sound bad. When I bring my car to show people I don't really want it sounding loud and ticky

Hi Johnny928,
My 88 does the same every now and then when the engine is cold from overnight parking and does so only sprodically. Once it is warm, the noise is gone. It sounds so loud that it is embarrassing that a Porsche sounds like a diesel. I recall the noise was much less frequent right after I changed the oil because it was filthy from the previous owner, but now it's getting more frequent. I suppose it's time to change the oil again now (after 600 miles) because I ran a bottle of Redline injector cleaner, and I was told the ticker should get better after 2-3 oil change. I use 20-50 but I think I will switch to 5-30 on the next change.

It's probably caused by noisy lifters. This is possibly caused by gunk preventing them from keeping full of oil, resulting in annoyances.

Sure fire replacement, new lifters.

Practical replacement, use a detergent, or solvent of some sort in the oil. I belive redline makes a possible product? Follow the instructions.

More fun solution? (if not realy legal) Run the heck out of it. Get on an empty roadway and run it up and down between 120-40. Have fun, go nuts. You get the oil good and hot and it can disolve the gunk given time. Change the oil shortly there after to prevent the gunk from redepositing.

I beleive viribus hit the nail on the head. Burn all the deposits out and try to run Chevron premium. As milk does a body good, Techron does an engine clean. Good Stuff Man.
