Strange things happening here.

I've been calling transmissons attached to the differential "transaxles" since I first started rebuilding them in 1968 for VWs.

I certainly was not clever enough to make this up.....so it had to have come from the VW people.

I've always called 356 and 911 transmissions "transaxles", too.

Greg, Transaxles even predate both of us..... Stutz in 1914 , Bugatti 1929 , VW in 1938 The Cord and even the Tucker used "driving unit assemblies" ....There is little NEW in automotive technology
