Cessation of Tailpipe Emission Testing

Beginning May 1, 2016, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has changed the inspection requirements for certain vehicles. Due to the cessation of tailpipe emission testing, the following passenger vehicles now will be exempted from inspection:

Gasoline powered vehicles registered passenger, model year 1995 & older with a GVWR 8,500 pounds or less.
Gasoline powered vehicles registered passenger, model year 2007 & older with a GVWR 8,501 to 14,000 pounds.
Gasoline powered vehicles registered passenger, model year 2013 & older with a GVWR 14,001 pounds or more.

As the fear mongers keep saying "your day is coming" for 50 state enforcement, the reality is more and more states are realizing what a waste of time and money it is regulating vintage cars.

This is similar to what Wisconsin did years ago, decided anything pre-ODBII wasn't worth going after anymore.

The last smog on the old very brown 1980 I had trouble finding a local check station willing or able to test it at all.

Yet another benefit of Antique Plates. No inspections/emissions test.

It's been a waste of the consumers money for a long period of time. Michigan did away with it years ago, and it only pertained to a few counties anyway.

Cars run so much cleaner nowadays and the few oldies running around ain't worth the waste of agency BS.

Short story...in reference to cleaner burning cars.

Buddy of mine tried to kill myself, by locking himself in the garage and starting his car...they found him before his mission was complete. They figured he was in there for a couple hours or so.

Two months later he locked himself in the garage, started the John Deere lawnmower...by by, lights out, been nice knowing you...dead.

None of my cars ever failed the emissions test, but this is a nice turn of events anyway.

My 928 has always passed, but now I don't need to switch out the x pipe ever two years for a day.
