Ok and I'm not actually recommending 0w oil. If I recall correctly 5w is the lowest listed in my UK handbook.

ok... got it.. just get a little scared thinking of the outcome of the use of such an oil unless it was really cold outside!

Mark, you addressed what I was curious about. Whether there is some extra protection that a higher cold weight provides. For a concern like a spun bearing, is it the higher viscosity itself that protects it, or it is more the tendency for the thicker oil to stick to parts more between engine shutdown and the next cold start? The question is also very relevant to synthetic vs natural, since natural can be much thicker when cold than even the cold weight suggests. I imagine synthetic finds it's way back to the oil pan much more quickly after shutdown.

that's a great question and i have nothing more than a gut feel for an answer for you. i suspect the oil that is trapped in the bearing is stuck, regardless of the weight, but possibly, more slips out if its thinner. if so, that could be a problem for the start up/warm up period. i wouldn't risk it.. i think the 20 -50 weight was spec'ed for a reason.... and because our cars have oil related issues when modified or when the wrong oil is used, why take any chances.

Not my experience unless you're looking for straight-weight 50. And sometimes AdvaceAuto or O'reilly will have that.

And then there's wallymart that always has Mobil1 15w50 on the shelf in 5 quart jugs for cheap.

When was the last time you checked? Not even 6-7 months ago the 15/20w-50's were in stock and this past June they were all gone. This was at Auotzone, O'Reilly's, Advanced Audo and Napa. I talked to the manager at all four locations and they confirmed they were pulled from local inventory.

Even the locally owned franchise stores that carry Royal Purple, Kendall, and BP don't even have the 50wt's on the shelf anymore.

I will never use M1 15w-50 and I only go to Walmart when all other possible resources are exhausted.

I just saw 20W-50 VR1 at my local O'Reilly's last month. They only had a 6-pack but the manager said he could have more the next day if I needed. Now I am curious. I'll check again on my way home from work today.

O'Reilly's is usually my first stop, they had the thinner VR1 on the shelf an it was obvious by their display there was no longer an empty spot for the 20w-50.

I'm sure each store manages their own inventory so this could be more local to me if volume of the thicker stuff was slowing way down. Must be for every store to all be the same like it is around here.

I'm set until spring, and over the winter I'm going to order a couple cases of the same oil Turbo Todd uses in his car and just stick with that:

Valvoline VR1 10/30 from Amazon. Buy a couple cases, plenty of Zinc, cheaper than the stores. I live in a moderate climate and I don't run the car that hard.
