I need to buy some oil for my car. Was my '82 factory filled with 20W-50? I was about to buy some when I came across a YouTube video of a 928 owner showing a jug of Shell 15W-40 stating "only use this oil...!!!"




Fast forward to 1:40

Should I go with one of these types of oil, or is their another blend I should consider?

Lots of discussion on this. I think there is at least some consensus that the early cars should use oil with high zinc (ZDDP) content. I plan on using 20W-50 VR1 from Valvoline in mine. But I'm sure you are about to get as many suggestions as posts on this one.

Opening a can of worms with this one, everyone has their preferences. The general Rennlist consensus over the years seems to be Mobil 1 15W-50 and it is what I've used on my 928 DD for the past 7+ years. There are guys on the forum that swear by Royal Purple, some Amsoil, and other brands and weights depending on climate and use.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is among the most readily available synthetic oils with relatively high Zn and P concentrations at 1300ppm and 1200ppm, respectively. Also, you can pick up a 5QT jug at Walmart for less than $25, which a bargain price these days.

The Shell Rotella 15W-40 is a dino oil, not synthetic. As dino oils go, Rotella 15W-40 is very good. It is CJ-4 rated oil designed for diesel engines but has high Zn (1200) and P (1100) contents and good shear resistance that work well in older gasoline engines. Quite a few guys on the BITOG forum with older gasoline engines and motorcycles run diesel oils with good results. If you plan to run dino oil, this would not be a bad choice.

That said, I tend to follow to crowd with this one and have been very happy with Mobil 1 15W-50. Lots of opinions out there though.

Most members of this forum will tell you to use 20W50 or else. I've been using Shell Rotella T6 5W40.

Sorry, didn't want to start the BITOG style thread. Was not interested in brand preferences, more concerned about the weight.

My personal preference is to run the same oil chacteristics as the factory filled oils in my cars, but I am open to dino/synth blends.

I got some RL searching to do!!!

In the meantime, can anyone clarify what oil Porsche filled our engines with at the factory ?

...and what are they putting in their cars today?

If you were still in Canuckistan my recommendation would be different, but for Georgia I'd go with Mobile 1 15-W-50 year round.

Doesn't matter what Porsche puts in their cars today. The engine tolerances are much tighter now and they need much lower viscosity oil.

Porsche is now marketing an oil for "classic cars". You might want that if you need the Porsche brand. Otherwise, the weight of the oil differed based on the climate where the car was being shipped. (At least, that's what I've been told.) The recommended oil weights, based on ambient temps, are found in the owner's manual.
