Default Analyze this- My clutch

Put a new clutch in the 79 back in 2013. Put about 500 miles on it. Due to a dead cylinder it tended to shudder under load on engagement. I am pulling the engine to replace.

Here is my clutch after 500 miles. Anything look amiss as far as wear ?

disc plate looks like on my (now sold) '73 914. Was it resurfaced? My 914 chattered and I also got to do clutch 2 times (while it looked good resurfacing cleared the problem.

the disc looks fine, but the steel surface looks grooved. is that what you are asking?
clutch is an easy replacement job.

Contact pattern is all on the outside ... note the lack of contact wear on the inside half of the PP and the disc. Looks to me like glazing of surfaces is causing the juddering. Everything needs to be checked for flatness and remedial minor surfacing where necessary. Check that disc contact pattern carefully, as its not only riding on the outside, but there's one highspot on the inside near your fingers in pic #1 (disc riding on diminished contact area of outer rim and center high spot?).

Looks like you are missing the high pressure grease that goes on your intermediate shaft

Thasks Guys! This is a weak area for me. I have installed a few clutches in my lifetime (buy never a 928) but never had the opportunity to see one this soon after install. Everything was reconditioned back in 2013 EXCEPT the flywheel (stupid)

The contact mark on the outer edge is what concerned me as well.

The intermediate plate is not grooved and still shows machine marks. The pic is deceiving

The section that is dark by my finger was like that prior to install. My guess is that the color is in the material used to re line the disc.

I am getting the flywheel surfaced and balanced. I may switch over the bellhousing to the layer style with ball cup and use release arm assembly from my 81. It's nice to have the parts on hand. Also need to get the HP grease. I used anti seize originally

Post some pics of all the other parts. They may reveal a bit more.

1. Flywheel.
2. Pressure plate.
3. Both sides of intermediate plate.
4. Both sides of both driven friction plates.
5. TOB ... and describe bearing condition.
6. Guide tube.

Fit a new pilot bearing to crank if you haven't already done so.

thats a good observation.. wear should be more even this could be due to a misaligned pressure plate .(H adjusters at different positions)

Here are some more images. Nothing suspect about the rear disc at all. I just had a spare flywheel machined true today so that will go in with the new engine. Also, pilot bearing was done on old engine and will be done on the new engine as well. Thanks
