Steering wheel locked while driving! Scared the crap outta me HELP

While taking a fairly tight right hand turn (thankfully slowly ) in my neighborhood, about 10-15 mph the steering wheel locked as if the key was out of the ignition. I had to turn the car off and the the ignition would not turn to start the car unless I jiggled the steering wheel. This wasn't too big of a deal but if this happens on a highway ramp at speed it could prove really bad.
Has anyone had this issue before?
What might the solution be?

You would first take the gauges and pod out, take the ignition cylinder out and see how this thing is either locking when its not supposed to, or always locked and worn so it just sometimes works.
This is the first thing I have ever suggested to "not drive" on this board in almost 15 years.
In fact, you have the same join date as me. But with less posts.

Try reproducing this...while stationary. Could it be a loose electrical switch that lets the car run with the key not being far enough towards ON?

Thanks for the links folks.
I did drive it around slowly replicating the slow tight turn where it happened and could not get it to do it again. I tried pushing the key in , out, and turning the ignition slightly towards the off direction but could not replicate the locking. I wish I could see inside the lock to see what happens when it actuates

crushingday, if this type of diagnosis is not in your wheel house: you aren't too far from Mrmerlin and Captain Earl.

It seem the column locking pin is no longer connected to the lock... best bet is to try to just remove it permanently (grind it down) or pin it in place - then there is no column lock - but also no chance of sporadic locking. I have never heard of this failure before. I did consider removing the locking pin in order to be able to enable passive keyless entry and push button start. I did find some details...
