My first Roger Box......
Long story short, picked this baby up at a steal, basically free, then it has some work done by His lordship Greg Brown. First time driving a 928 slush box, and decided to test it out by driving up to Monterey for the weekend with the kiddo....
ill post my impressions along the way.

1 1/2 years later I'm still getting used to driving a slush-box 928.
The drive starts off with me jamming my left foot into the floorboards going for the clutch at start-up. This is followed by me stepping out of the car and falling over due to my left leg falling asleep during the drive.

You can wake them up. It isn't TOO bad. Tight cables, pedal properly hitting the kickdown, and some ecu tuning and they can be "lively" for some.

Remember Porsche deliberately gave the 928 a V-8 so it could bog around at low RPM most of the time getting better MPG and the engines last longer With properly adjusted cables and a working kickdown switch it goes from slow to go in a heart beat. The old MYTH about Porsches needing to be reved was based on the roller crankshaft bearings used on the Carrera four cam 4 cylinder race engines....

Good point Jim about the 3 speed trans, didn't consider them his looks to be an S4 and I drive S3's
I like to keep mine between 2k to 3k RPM depending on the gear, a sustained 3k, I up shift.
I am a firm believer in using the low end torque from the proper gear.
The other night I was affectively using the remote kick down switch installed on the SC car, I was cruising the local strip in 3rd at ~40 mph (in a target rich environment Hopped up Camaro got along side, hit the switch (down to 2nd she went) and nailed it..., next
Sometimes I wonder if the low rpm and having to goose the engine to downshift really saves $ in stop and go traffic.
Watching the MPG average gauge on the Jeep, it does better in Sport mode in stop and go as I don't have to over drive the gas peddle for it to move out.
In drive the 8 speed Auto in the Jeep is in 4th before I get out of my driveway LOL

If the car is set up correctly then I am confident you will enjoy the S4. The only problem with the automatic as I am concerned is that it is old technology but in its day was probably the best of class.
If the S4 had the tiptronic 6 speed gearbox in my Cayernne turbo S it would be something different again- of that I am sure. That it does not is a fact but I still enjoy driving my 928 nonetheless. The manual tranny has performance advantages when driving on the limit but a good driver can still get a lot out of the MB lump. In heavy/regular traffic there is no comparison - the auto is superior.
The optimal solution has to be one of each!

The panic-stop brakes look pretty effective too.
