Shifter
Harvey: I agree the one shown is not what I would have; I don't know if he is still making them, but Paul Champaign makes a very nice leather shifter; maybe I should say he was re-covering the original; probably some others to choose from. Garage 9, also retired, but there may be some available if anyone is looking.

Burning Brakes
Never mind the Laforza , this one needs replacement ROW front wings, a bumper cover and new paint, maybe a headlight bar, but otherwise may be promising. A '78 Euro manual, running, smogged and registered in CA is a good head start anyways.

Would anyone consider this project for $2k?
Hey guys I'm new. I've been looking to get a 944 for a month or so now, but haven't come across the right one yet. Finally finished dental school. Don't have a lot of money but would love to have get into the circle. Not sure how much longer I can stand driving my wife's 02 VW Beetle haha.
This old 928 project popped up recently and is pretty local to me. The seller has since dropped his price to $2k with the below report. I'm pretty handy with a wrench and can paint, but this looks like quite a doozy. Would anyone consider it? Thanks.

From the owner:
The car was driven until 2010. The car was draining the battery down over a couple of weeks so the PO put the car on a battery saver switch. (not a car guy obviously) so after a few attempts to sort out relays he just parked it and covered it up. The car will turn over and the motor and transmission are good. The car has some light surface rust on a few spots which are typical for 928's. No rot or through rust anywhere. Leather on the front seat covers are trashed due to exposure and lack of care, I ripped the cracked leather off to check the foam and bolsters. Tops of rear seats trashed due to exposure and lack of care. Front faom sets and bolsters are great, rear seats are great except the tops of the head rests, headliner and all accessories intact and in good condition. Dash is cracked on the top surface, leather wrap on steering wheel is shot as well as the shift **** leather. The remainder of dash and interior are in good condition. Carpets are in great shape. The car will require the normal care in mechanical startup as you would imagine, purging all gas and fluids, replacing all filters, priming with new fluids, and a new battery. The brake rotors will need a light turn and I'm sure there will be some relay checking as well. Car is a rare S with the 4.7 and and Auto in a super rare color. Great candidate for a restoration or a run it as a patina hot rod.

No. Run away. This, based upon what you wrote. If you’d written: “Looking for a 928 project in which to sink many hundreds, if not thousands, of hours that will consume all of my disposable income for at least 5 years and cost me my sanity and marriage” then this would be the one.

Spend more and get one that has at least one thing going for it.
Glacier Blue is a cool color., car basically needs everything it won't be cheap or quick. If you are looking for a driver anytime in the next couple years, I would think this is not the car for it With that said, my project was equally as bad. It's a fun ride and experience.

PS-glacier is very rare (saw a baby blue car on sale last year) but 4.7S is not (all of them are 'S'). If you plan on spending >100s of hours yourself with >$25k in parts/upholstery, go for it. Otherwise, run!
PSS-plenty of $5k running OBs out there that are much better shape/condition.

Wow, Zach, didn't know this about you. I am very offended!

I might be the only one around here dumb enough to buy stuff in that condition. Granted I got two of them for that same price.
