Wow, the trucks wheel lug nuts really ground that rim up... You are lucky it wasn't worse. Great that you managed to keep control of the car.

 

Thanks everyone. True it could have easily been worse. This is mostly just a hassle. I'll get my good set of front fenders painted and installed, finally. Yay?

It is a not a good spot for merging. Southbound (truck) 205 traffic dumps into the 'fast' lane uphill after going through a tunnel, northbound (me) into the 'slow', then it merges again with another three lanes. I had to stay in the right lane because I was taking the first exit, so I was just dawdling along. The truck looks like it was going about the same speed if not slightly faster than me and both of us were in each others blind spot.

Teaches me not to drive like a muggle.

 

Two estimates from local shops right both around $7200. That's assuming a new rim and fender at $1500 each, mind. Still waiting to see if the company will pay or if I'll go through their insurance.

I've already ordered a used rim and NOS Conti DWS (since replaced by the DWS06). After powder-coating and mounting I figure $600 total for the wheel and tire.

One shop said they could rework the fender as is, adding sheet metal as needed. That doesn't sound all that great.

928 503 913 04 is the part number for the front half of the quarter panel, but I'd rather leave the jamb alone if possible.


Anyone have a shell they are willing to cut or know where to get a decent front section of the LR quarter?

 

OP, sorry for this to have happened to you, collisions like this often end up much worse.
Most major trucking companies are self insured into the millions, a claim such as yours is very small to them, it may take 3 or 4 loads to recover their loss, like a flea on a bear, hope the best for your damages.

 

Saw an almost identical situation 2 weeks ago. I was heading N on the 290 here in Houston, just cruising in the 3rd lane when a small convertible MGB passed on the right side.
Lots of construction and a truck was merging from the feeder road with no acceleration lane. He "kissed" the MG with his rear tandem wheels and left circular marks all along the passenger side from bow to stern.
The trucker kept going and probably did not even feel it. I pulled over and thought the guy was having a seizure right there. Can't blame him. That is a small car and having a 18 wheeler up close and personal, would probably soil anyone's underwear....

Ken, you were very lucky, keep us updated.

 

Insurance went through. It really feels like they were slow-walking me. Another month just to get into the body shop, then a few weeks there. So it's going to be 3 months from the accident to get my S4 back. Grrr...nice weather here now, of course.

To top it off, my '86.5 is sold so I'll be 928-less for a while!

 

Found another shop to do the work starting tomorrow.

White car doesn't leave until the end of April, so maybe I won't have a 928 break!

 

Getting there! They managed to rework the fender without using new parts.

WYAIT, I had some good front fenders painted (old ones were poorly repaired from a PO accident).

Today I OK'ed having the front bumper cover refinished...with headlight squirters delete, of course.

Not to mention a new outside mirror (old one had a stripped hollow bolt) and fixing the wonky door handle.

Going to be like new!

 

All that new paint is going to add unnecessary weight and slow you down

 

I agree. Strip it, and go all polished aluminum. Strip the whole car.

The original front fenders and rear bumper cover were so full of filler plus there was so many layers of old paint that have been stripped off of the moldings that I think it will be 5-10lbs lighter after all this.

Still trying to justify a shiny new WYAIT front spoiler to seal-the-deal...

 

I think you should put it to a vote. I vote you should add the front spoiler. And since I'm one of your customers, you have to listen to me. (It's written somewhere to that effect.) Does that seal-the-deal?

I would think by now that the slipped discs will be starting to hurt some- trust your lawyers are standing by to start the injury compo negotiations!

I went over the List and decided the $450-ish for a new spoiler would be better spent on rebuilt upper-control-arms and a rebuilt steering rack and...hey, motor mounts!

The spoiler is easy enough to change later.
