Why did they have to mount a tire on the roof? If they still have the space saver spare in the trunk and one full size spare in the back, do they need three spares? It looks really odd to have a tire mounted on the roof IMO. I hope they just glued the GPS unit to the dash and didn't drill holes. I am all in favor of their father/son journey, but why ruin the car's looks right from the get go.

Cool.....well prepared advanture but, I would have kept the factory seats. Racig seats in camel country are a baaaaad combination.

Pics of the Renault 4.......very Mad Max-ish.

Perhaps when they get to India ( if they get to ) they ditch the car and fly home. There a points along the way where fixing the car or hauling it home may not be much of an option.
The value of the car and cost of the expedition has to be looked at as all money spent for the adventure.

Wow, that's great. Congrats on having the wherewithall and adventurousness.
A year or two ago, I came across a blog kept by a family- also French IIRC, that was touring North America in a refit military vehicle. I passed them on the road and the URL was on the vehicle.

I couldn't interpolate the much of the French text- it seems like a great event to generate support for a charity of some sort and hope that is part of the plan of action!

Is this the same vehicle you saw? I spotted them last February near Tucson Arizona; they were a French family visiting the BioSphere II. This truck was badass!!!! They have driven it all over the world.
