thanks for the link Kevin. by the way, I saw a universal flywheel locking tool available. has 3 holes instead of my early car 2. does this mean we can drill a hole and make the early flywheel lock work for the S4????

Are we sure one size fits all? There are different part numbers for S3 [9226] and S4 [9248] cams unless I got something wrong- the S3 having a wider LSA as I seem to remember might suggest why this is the case.

Whether or not that makes any practical difference to the tool I have no position on that one.

Any chance you might trace these and post the copy as a PDF to use as a template for a fabrication piece?

Just wondering why there is a sub designation 3 and 4 on the two pieces- any ideas. This designation [9226] is for the S3 cams as per the WSM.

I have to be a grinch here. You should buy yourself a set like I did.

Somebody else can I won't. Tracing a copy of those is akin to asking me to make a copy of Jim Morrison's CDs.

Uhhmm, those aren't the factory tools either so they were copied from the factory tool and made in a plastic(?) template like what Fred is suggesting. Isn't that the same thing that tool supplier did? I don't see it as stealing Jim's CD set since to make those templates was no where near as labour intensive as Jim's CDs.

So, your ethics are based on how long it took and the level of effort to make the copy?

They are hardened metal.

Actually, no that is not my point. I was stating that this company most likely did exactly what Fred was suggesting, unless they are the authorized Porsche tool manufacturer. The point I was trying to make is that unless this company initially developed the tools or have been authorized by Porsche to make and distribute them under licence, they did exactly what Fred wants to do, except that they are making a profit from it and Fred isn't. At what point do ethics kick in over profit making?

Kevin,

If you feel there is a copyright concern here then I very much respect your point of view and please be assured you should not feel as though you are being a grinch [whatever that is]. As I am concerned this is not an ethical or a financial issue it is simply an availability issue.

My understanding is that the original tool is not available any more albeit I am not sure it is really needed. The picture you showed is not marked like the factory original item - an unlicensed knock off itself?

To date I have not even come across one for sale thus my request as I have a set of S3 cams I may well install one of these days.

I would like to think that Porsche would not cry foul on copyright infringement for such 30 years on but to be fair, in your society I would not want to be vaguely exposed to such if that were to be the case.

Rgds

Fred

Wel, Jim's CDs are scanned copies of the Porsche manuals soooooo, so much for copyrights.

Livio, thanks for the offer but I printed or the pictures in the link and glued them to a cardboard. Should do the job.

Mark, as I said before, you need to see the timing mark on the S3 driver side exhaust cam to understand what I'm talking about.

This could be developed into an app. Have the tool apear on the screen when the camera is on and the user could lign it up by pointing the camera at the head with the cams in place.

Just to clarify (I'm sure this has been covered in other threads, but it would be good to have in this thread too), the same tool also works for the S3 cams?

i.e. does Porsche Tool 9248 include the same 9226 cam profile alignment tools?
