Default Camshaft locking tool picture wanted.

Anyone has a picture taken perpendicularity of the OE camshaft locking/profile tool that's used to check the camshaft timing (between the intake and exhaust cam) during the chain installation? I just want to double check my work and will just cut it out of paper.

Though according to post #15, you don't need it.

im still wondering that point. you use that one dimension for two arrows on the cams, and if that distance is (something like 113mm) the cams are synched.. whats the tool for , "feel good"?

Imre's car is an '85 (?) On the S3 cams, the pointers on the (exhaust? can't remember) cams are more like plateaus, and it's not entirely intuitive where to measure the distance to ensure you've got it right. So not unreasonable to doublecheck with the tool.

I'm just double checking a work that I'm doing on the someone else's car and I guess I'm more careful with this one than I usually am with my own.

The car is an S4 but with custom cams that are marked like the '85. That flat top marking on the exhaust cam (only on the driver side) is making me want to triple check the timining.

Thanks for the link. I've saved the pic with the ruler.

Being a tooth out either way will not cause valve damage.
You can also rotate the engine by hand (with belt installed) and then do a compression test.
If the chain is out 1 tooth it will change the compression by 50psi.

ha ha... and then what?... your off by a tooth and the entire front of the engine has to come apart again?

a tooth off is a long way.... cant imagine that the little mark distances cant be absolute indicator that the cams are aligned right.

Mark, you have to see the marking in question to understand what's going on.

Colin, I'll be manually rotating it and might even do a leakdown test just to be sure.

Kevin, where did you buy those? I wonder if they would they work on GT cams too?

Imre,

I have a set that I made up which You are more than welcome to use. I made them out of Masonite. I can also make them out of a plastic if that is any better but it is only for positioning purposes. You will still have to fine tune the timing anyway but this at least will stop you from having them out by a tooth.

And they work on all cams.

I still cant understand how you would need the templates, because when you use the 113mm distance between marks, the cams cant be off. by the way, I used the real tools on my first cam job, and they work on GT cams as well the differences are subtle enough to not make a diff.
