The paint guys did a nice job, when I was looking at the car I lifted window seals, checked jambs and under hood, I really only noticed once I was in the trunk, back by the butterfly ground and in the spare well I saw some evidence of the original color. I hope that with the apparent effort it was painted with that the paint itself is quality and will take a good buff out, with a couple of touch ups I can see it looking incredible.

Still in Virginia, 3.5 hours south to Virginia Beach!

When I measured the distance from the lip of the torque tube on XS29L9B's car to the forward TT bearing I got exactly the same distance as on my car (10.50 inches). Using a dial gauge the measured crank end play measurements for our cars were within a few thousandths of an inch. Both cars still on the low side of factory end play tolerance. The nearly identical measurements were a surprise - and a nice one.

Yes, that was nice to see how little play there had been/was in this important piece. The PB Blaster sure made a TON of smoke off the manifolds though , next time I drove the car Thank you again.

Hopefully mine fares as well! PB is good stuff, especially when mixed liberally with time...

Don't invest in the stock S4 rims until you check out the tire situation. Last I heard the selection of tires in the correct size for the rear rim was pretty much zero. I'm lucky in that I have a nice set of tires in that size, but more than likely you will want to do something different from the point of view of tire choice as well as looks. Many like the 997 Carrera III rim on these cars. Fits well, looks good, wide tire choice, more meat, and wont break the bank. On the other hand I think the last S4 rear rims I bought from 928 intl for $150 each. May have had some scuffing, not sure as I polished them anyhow.

The tires on the car now are Falkens and look like they are pretty new. All 4 are the correct size for the 7" wheel but one is mounted on the single 8" that I currently have. I figured I'd get the 8", put the 8's back on the rear where they belong, then paint them something dark and de-emphasizing, maybe highlight the holes in guards red, and run them until the tires are done. At that point I'll re-evaluate and maybe look for a set of Cup II's or other.

I looked at a 928 in NC that had dark Cayman wheels on it and fell in love with that look, though I suspect I'd be getting into the issues of 18's on a car designed for 16's, offsets, and other fun and expensive things. My immediate goal is to get caught up on maintenance and safety issues for now, cosmetics are a far secondary goal.

Offsets are the only real issues. You need the correct ones, and it's not too common.

Lots of guys run 18". The GTS came with 17" IIRC.

The five or ten spoke Panamera wheels in 18 inch size fit these cars beautifully with no spacers needed. Can usually find a set online for around $500-600.

Its quite possible that the wheels I was enamored with were Panamera 10 spokes, I got my information second hand from the guy selling an 84 in NC. Thanks for this info, I had to put spacers on my 911 to fit Cup 2's and the spacers were pretty pricey IIRC and make it a pita to do any brake work. Worth it to get out of the 15" phone dials that came on it tho!
