Default 1982 5-speed: Nasty chunks on transmisson drainplug

Finally got around to piddling on my project 928.

I haven't had a chance to test the transmission outside of 1st and reverse, so I'm worried.

Pulled the plugs and changed the transmission fluid. Both the front and rear drain plugs had a fair amount of filings, however the front plug had some real nasty chunks.

What are the chances I'm going to be adding a new transaxle list of needed parts?

I guess I'll pull the transmission tomorrow and assess the damage.

Compare the cost of a rebuild with replacement.

i remember having a big chunk out of my reverse gear. no more pieces were in the case, so we just rebuilt the synchros and put it back together.

if you get all the chunks, you might be ok depending on where they came from .

His post states he has only been able to get it in first and reverse....no real driving yet.

still might make sense to get it driving BEFORE puling the trans....unless it is too expensive to fix the running issues.

Clean those pieces and take a better picture, so we can tell more about the origin of the chunks.

???...lol. Granted, there's been a few times when I've felt like doing the same thing.

Anyhow...

Yes, some better prices would be beneficial. But, it's never a good thing to pull pieces that large out of any transmission.

Brian.

The mechanics are easy, I stalled out on the electrical issues and interior.

The car runs and drives, its just lacking legality. It doesn't even have license plates.

I don't have a good place to sneak it out.

They were hard steel, some looked blued from heat.

My untrained assumption is the synchros are gone and the chunks are chewed off the side of a gear(s).

Less play who can guess where the metal chunks came from.

The pieces on the left look like the tips of teeth, and to the right are flat flakes that I'm unsure of.

Did you end up replacing the transmission?
