Now I'm afraid to even look for parts.

I posted pictures of #89 a little over a week ago, and got it running this past weekend. I replaced some fuel lines and the pump, checked the normal items, changed the fluids and gave it a try. She fired right up but then ran up to about 2k RPM and held there. After a while it came down a bit but still too high, I suspect a vacuum leak.
Given that the car hasn't been on the road in a while I only backed it out of the garage for a wash and drove it far enough to test the gears. The quick test showed that the power steering is gone, I suspect the pump. Coincidentally my '79 decided to drop it's power steering fluid on the ground with a failed seal in the rack on Friday night.
The reason that I bought the car was for the transmission, I was promised that it had been rebuilt. This is definitely not the case, the 1st gear syncro is shot, the others felt ok but it's hard to tell since I only made it out of 2nd once. Instead of a killer deal, I got what I paid for so no regrets at least.
I'm afraid to look for parts, it seems that whenever I do, I buy a complete car with the same bad syncros and no power steering.

Unfortunately you get what you pay for.
Buy from one of the reputable 928 vendors and I am sure you will be fine.
Early manual gearboxes were all pretty bad as far as synchros are concerned. Operation can be improved by the right oil and correct clutch set up.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Definitely agree with getting what you pay for, the latest addition was a gamble that I just couldn't pass on. I'll try replacing the fluid in this one first, just to buy myself some time while the other two are out of commission.
The repairs will quality for sure, the cars deserve it.
