Hi Gents. Newcomer here, with an 87 S4 auto, recently picked up, in fantastic shape, 120K kms, no rust, and no history, after 60K kms, so I am doing the tb, waterpump, rebuilding the tensioner, intake manifold refresh, with a few rotten hoses. As I wrote yesterday, and Dr Bob answered, I followed the procedure to the letter, but as I was putting the crank shaft pulley on, things went bad. The crank does not line up. I turned over the motor by hand, the cams lined up, but not the crank. I am going to undo the crank and start over. I was wondering if Montreal had a support group, for these cars. I am on an Audi site, where the support is great, local GTG's, etc. Looks like I have to attend Frenzy next year
Cheers
Don
Hi Hilton. I am sure, that is my problem.I will go back out to the garage, and recheck the balancer. It is probably not seated properly yet. I did not torque it down. It is just a snug fit. I put a long screwdriver down piston no. 1 and my TDC is perfect. So, everything else is correct, just the harmonic balancer is not seated properly. I turned the motor a few times, by hand, and felt no resistance.
Thanks for the reply. A photo of the intake refresh, and the subject.

Reason: Add photo
If the cam timing marks line up with No 1 at TDC, then I'd just agree with Hilton that you have the harmonic balancer on the wrong way round. From the photo you have only replaced the a/c belt, so as the crank is not torqued you have almost no extra work in taking off the pulley, a/c pulley and balancer to flip it over.
Yes gents, it is on backwards. Simple fix. Thanks for the replies. The car has spent all it's life in Canada, Elgy. Toronto area, originally, now north of Mtl.

Yes the vibration dampener is backward.
(Oups, you just beat me to it)
Put the dampener on the right side and everything should be good.
When you will put the crankshaft bolt and washer back, make sure that the washer is on the right side. One side is flat and the other as a "recess" section.
The flat side goes against the bolt head and the recess side against the pulley.
Thanks Dwayne.
If inverted, the pulley may not be aligned well. This is not good.
Don't ask me how I know...
The best place to get information is here.
You'll find the most knowledgeable people from all around the world right at your finger tips.
The "Rennlist" search function is a great tool.
The Google search function is even better. https://www.google.ca/?gws_rd=ssl#q=...+inurl:928+oil
Just put what you're looking for after the "928". Like "oil" here.
Don't forget the space in between.
The critical element here was to ensure that the crank was locked at 45 BTDC with the cam wheels offset by 3 teeth before the TDC position when fitting the cambelt so as to ensure everything is correctly indexed.
As long as that remains the case then having the pulley on back to front is nothing more than a nuisance but just goes to show how careful you have to be when taking these jobs on.
Thanks Fred, I did that. And Malcolm, I have a brother in S.W. Calgary, and visit often. If I ever go out with my Porsche, I will look you up for an informal gtg. Cheers guys
