How much of a hassle is it to pull the tranny to replace a leaking torque converter seal? Is there a tutorial video on this procedure?

Joe:

The torque convertor seals are very robust and very infrequently leak, although I replace them, when things are apart.

Most of the time, the O-ring for the pump leaks between the aluminum housing and the cast iron pump. These O-rings get rock hard (along with all the other O-rings in the transmission, BTW.)

This is a fairly straightforward job, the toughest part being scraping off the old gasket between the case and the front pump assembly.

This will stop the external leakage in this area. The internal leakage (from the internal rock hard O-rings) will continue until slippage occurs.

There are some "seal softening" products that have no negative effects. Lucas makes one. I've never tried Trans X, but I believe Bill Ball used this and was able to stretch a few more miles out of his transmission, before complete failure.

Me too. My 88 leaks 2qts a day when I first got it. Every day was a refill with stop leak.

By the end of day 3, was dry until I upgraded transmissions 2yrs later.

Transmission removal not the worst job I've encountered. I first viewed Dean_Fuller's video - helpful.
I did mine on stands/liftbars by myself. The most cumbersome part was backing the transmission off the torque tube. Getting it back on was a breeze - I used a good strap and ratchet and it did what I needed. I needed a second jack and a transmission brace which fit right into my good jack. Quality ratchet straps needed as well to support transmission for a bit while crossmember is out. I had a long thread on my transmission saga. Put in one of Greg's new ones.

Did mine on stands without a lift by myself. Not difficult but time consuming. That might be due to the fact that I refreshed the rear suspension bushings and shocks and rebuilt the torque tube at the same time as doing the trans pump reseal and the torque converter bearings along with B3 clutches and B1 band. Took a HF trans jack and a second bottle jack to lower and raise the combined trans/torque tube unit. Once I had everything ready it was really quick getting it all back together before 928 OCIC 2012. I think it only took a day or two to get it together to hit the road.
