Ha ha I agree...I've been tempted a couple times...and I just started on this nonsense, and am doing nothing near what we're talking about here....but I know if I started adding it would be a bad idea.
I'm sorta having that week with my reef tank. Again, not the order of magnitude as the car in question here, but I get that feeling...

Cars are just getting so advanced these days, and the 928 so far from what *is* modern now, that you have to separate it. No more dash-computers, or modding the interior to "look" modern. Other than power and suspension (and maybe trans) - the rest has to be left.

No problem in the least, Sterling, if I'd been thinking for a millisecond I should have realized that your stock electronics have been gone for a long time.
Your frustration is part and parcel of being (and having been) a real innovator in this community for longer than most of us have around- I took the easy road with building a hotrod 928- have Greg do all the important bits. You have always been a trailblazer, and I have always admired that.
I've been trying to get the next motor together for the Zombie for more than a year and a half, most of the pieces are in hand and it should just be a matter of assembling everything. All I gotta do is degree some cams and take a couple of buckets of parts to Greg's, but even that is nearly impossible given how much life and work is getting in the way these days. My solace is that I have no 'real' problems to speak of, and my rationalization is that as soon as a 928 ceases to be a daily driver, all timeline pressure is off, and thus the stakes become pretty low.
It's supposed to be fun, right ?!??!!

SG, I saw the other thread, and there are some good points made by BC in both.
The main point I like from BC is this one:
"That motec you have is generations behind, but it is also something you bought in the early 2000s. Its a computer. Computers have a half life of about 3 years"
You forgot or just neglected to remember that it was a computer, didn't you?
Even though it's a computer for a car, it's still a computer and computers get superceded.
Your laptop that you use every day is not from the early 2000's, and down deep you really know that your car computer will fall out of date(though subconsciously, we really expect them to last forever)
Let's get that thing together so that driving it will get you over the receipt-adding mistake you made.

Sterling,
I know you are very serious in expressing exactly how you feel about the state of your 928 at this moment in time. Still, I must say that you made me, and probably a few others, smile since we can surely identify with spending way more money on our 928's than any rational person would for a car.
As others have said, 928 owners should never ever purposely add up what they have really spent on their 928's since it would have an adverse impact on the National Debt! For that reason alone, I keep the total for mine hidden in the back of a large book of receipts that I hide from myself and promise not to look at until the last rites are being administered.
As Rob said, it's supposed to be fun, and right now it isn't for you, but it will be again if you stay with it. What you have done for this community by pushing the engineering envelope with the modifications to your car is immense and greatly appreciated!
This is one of those moments when anyone in a similar situation would probably say, "just step back for a moment or two, or a week or two, and reset things." They may look different then and there will probably be more solutions available than originally thought.
Stay with it!

Has anyone every been so frustrated with a car that they would rather burn it to the ground than to try to sell it? I'm at this point with my 928. I was back in the mode to try and get it back together.... and nothing would make me feel better than putting it in a field and just burning it and all the parts that I have, turning my back on it and never looking at another 928 again....
Life would be much more simple afterwards.
seriously...
I'm never going to get any money from it.... its too custom..... spent too much money on it..... burn it and bury it.... and be done... move on to a phase in my life where I don't have this bitch hanging from my neck.
Motec has decided to not support the m48 pro in my configuration any more... and the local tuners won't either....
I cant get tires sizes to match the wheels and body mods that were made a few years ago....
I gutted the console for a computer that never materialized.
so yes I can buy a new computer and wire it up and get it running and tuned... and yes I can get new wheels made and buy tires to make it drive they way it should.. but hell I could buy a gts for what that is going to cost... and to be honest.... if I'm going to spend that much? a 928 isn't what I want any more.......
so to fuel the fire today.. (no pun intended) I added up all spent on the car and development of it. I have 168K in the car...... cant even get 1/4 of that for it... and if I do I'm giving away 3/4 of that... and those that know me.... know.... no way that's happening.....and while I'm frustrated and pissed... I'd feel better pouring gas on it and watching the 1/4 burn knowing that no one is taking advantage of my situation to end up with a cherry car for 1/4th of the cost.
Mods please change my title to 928 hater.... because right now I hate this bitch.

I wanted to sell my 928 a few years ago when I was frustrated about some business related issues with a start-up I was funding.
Time heals all wounds. Just chill for a bit, and a solution will present itself. Remembering the variocam solution, it may be 3am again...
I also have an unrecoverable amount of $$ in my 928, but it is what it is..
I keep remembering the feeling I get when I drive it.... That's priceless.. it has so much balance. The Ferrari is more nervous, and the Aston Martin comes close. But the feeling is different.
Anyway, relax, go have a beer, and give it a few days. There's a smile in there. I'm sure of it !!

As any of us who has modified a 928 must realize, its money gone for good. I stopped adding it up several years ago when the frustration of owning and modifying an old car became overwhelming. Auto technology has moved forward so fast since the 80/90`s there was no way I was going to make this car more than it was when new. So I stopped....and now try to enjoy this car for exactly what it is. A fun, unique, beautiful to look at old Porsche. My stress level has dropped and enjoyment factor has gone up. I`m at peace with this bitch and it`s all good......

Well if your gonna burn it to the ground lets do it right. Step 1: Insure your car for crazy replacement value. Step 2: Wait a week. Step 3: Sit in your car (preferably away from your house) with a lit cigarette (even if you don't smoke). Step 4: Put the lit cigarette on the passenger seat and walk away. Step 5: Collect that big fat insurance check and buy a ?? Your welcome T
