What most people would walk by as junk, Rob can see as a part with potential. With some patient refurbishment and cleaning, you would barely recognize things like those intake tubes compared to what looked like when he picked them up.

I think a euro should be next, perhaps an east coast car, Continental Orange or Talbot yellow would be a great project..;-)

They ain't done yet...

Not until that spare tire finds its way into the trunk of #107...and that black screw that is laying under the roller toolbox, partially covered in dust, with just about 2mm of its tip sticking out past the lift post, gets put back into the wedge shaped detail piece on the door panel that goes around the black electrical tube between the door and jamb. Probably the one closest to the rubber door seal, passenger side...but I'd be just guessing at this point...lol.

we need a proper unveil! All angles, top and bottom, inside and out. Maybe a new thread? Call it "the Emergent". All we have here is an empty cacoon.

Not even close. William just wanted to put some miles on it, so we stuck the wideband in it, checked the fuel pressures (hammered on the WUR a bit) and the ignition timing, said a Hail Mary or three (well, I did), and he drove it home. Still waiting on the dash to be refinished, we need to button up the doors, charge the A/C and stick stickers on everything. And a million other little details to get 'er ready. (Are they ever done?)

Default Rookie diaries, Day 183

William said Minerva was running a little rough, so I made a housecall and we took turns playing Darwin, pulling individual plug wires to see whether idle was affected. Cylinder 1 didn't seem to be contributing much, so the next step was to crack the banjo bolt at the distributor- Fuel seep, so that's good. Cracked the fitting at the injector-nothing. Bone dry.

Pulled the #1 fuel pipe, and tried blowing it out. No dice, the line is plugged. Took the banjo fitting off and blew 90 psi into it- still plugged. Got a piece of thin welding rod and discovered a plug of varnish near the 90 degree bend just before the injector. Rodded it out, blew some brake cleaner through, and reinstalled. Lo and behold, she runs better.

We're thinking A) we (and by 'we' I mean 'I'..) should have blown out all the hardline lines _before_ installation (and maybe before AND after plating), and (B) It might be the better part of valor to do this now, to make sure each is fully cleaned out inside and make sure flow is even.

It suggests that this might be one of those CIS engine refurb 'best practices' I should probably have been doing....

I was having trouble with lines and injector rails corroding very quickly after plating.

I think they use acids to strip away the old plating.

I now rinse each line thoroughly with water and spray it with WD40 as soon as it returns from the plating process, to eliminate this problem.

Not sure if that would have helped your varnish problem, however.

As Rob mentioned, we found fuel line to #1 was completely clogged. Next, we took the time to remove and test each fuel line. "A day late and a dollar short" is the old saying, but #1 wasn't the only problem. Running like a proper smooth Porsche V8 now, tuning the CIS should make it even better. Copper welding wire, brake cleaner, more wire, and brake cleaner until it came out clear.

Each line had partial, and one other total occlusion. It is remarkable the engine was running at all!

Both Rob and I looked at those nice, newly plated lines and couldn't wait to get them back on the car when it was ready. Just goes to show you, anyone can get distracted with shiny objects, lol! We learned another valuable lesson, and it will definitely be going in our technique book for future reference.
