Default Decisions decisions on wheels...

Hello,

Sold a motorcycle over the weekend and now have some cash to spend on my long term 928 project. It is a '78.

I already bought a borla exhaust and a stainless y pipe from Dave Lomas. So that's $1100 gone.

I still have a $1000 to squander and am debating between having the original wheels (phone dials) bead blasted and power coated with some new tires or finding some different wheels.

Obviously wheels are a matter of personal taste so my question revolves around what specifics do I need to know about what wheel will work/fit and which ones won't? Bolt pattern spacing and offset are two numbers I am aware of but what are they for a '78?

Since my budget is limited I was thinking about shopping for used wheels on craigslist and getting new tires. I see Cup 1 and Cup II wheels which are okay and lots of other for 911's and the like but do not know if any of the specifics will let them fit a 928.

I have been looking at pictures for wheels that hit me just right but have not come to any firm conclusions yet.

The phone dials are okay but kinda boring.

Craig

If you are patient you may catch a set of 17s or 18s here with 75-80% tires for around the 1k mark.
I bought a set of Carrera III 18x11 and 18x8.5 with michilin pilots for under 1k shipped less than a year ago.
I'm not sure what will fit your '78 though.

I have a set of the Carrera lll's/997's I'm considering selling. I bought them awhile back, but the car I ended up finding already had a set of wheels I've decided to keep. The following picture is not of the actual wheels I have, it's just a pic I found on Google for the time being.

I'd be willing to let them go for $1k, so if you're interested, just let me know and I'll send some actual pics.

I put 17" Turbo Twists on mine. I like them better than the manhole covers. (17x7 on the front, 17x8.5 on the rear)

I put 18 inch Panamera S 10 spokes on mine. They are cheap, I can easily find them for >$600 and sometimes find them for as low as $300 on CL .

You can do what I did and get used tires ( I only considered matching pairs with >90% tread) and can easily come out for under the $1K mark.

I have these on my 78. However, phone dials will someday become an original look/option acquisition.

Personally, I believe you have to be kind of careful putting a "to modern of a rim" on the old body style.

It really depends on what you prefer - the original 80's look or a modern facelift. Personally I think the body shape and style can handle both.

I would stick with the phone dials with an OB. Saying that, it took me about 5 mins to decide I hated the original manhole rims (7 slot) of the S2, and found a second hand set of Cup III rims and tyres for $600, then spent $600 having them refurbed.

But I do really love these rims.

So are the bolt patterns pretty much standard among all Porsches? Diameter and offset need to be my main concern with fitment? I like some wheels I have seen on 944s that are 5 spoke in black with a silver outside diameter, not sure if those are Fuchs? Not sure if they would work. So many choices...

Yes, all modern Porsche wheels are 5x130 bolt pattern. You need to find out what the size and offset of your current wheels are then you can compare how wheels with different widths and offsets will fit in comparison. The width and offset should be cast into the back of your phone dial wheels.

This is a Fuchs wheel. I've never seen them on a 928 and couldn't find any pictures of them mounted on a 928 in an image search.

I was not able to find any 928s with Fuchs mounted either, I guess that should tell me something...

Stopped by the local powder coating place I can get my phone dials bead blasted and powder coated for $60 a piece. Then I can splurg on tires and still have a few $ left over to do some needed upgrades. Was thinking satin black.

Fuchs seem to be pretty darn pricey too so maybe that was nto the best idea anyway.

I will keep looking for other options in the interim.

Thanks for every ones input!

Fuchs are expensive because they are popular with many models/years and are forged, making them light weight and strong. IMO a 928 looks better with a more modern wheel design. The shape was way ahead of it's time, why use a dated wheel? Cup I, II or turbo twist seem to be the most popular. Also, the Carrera III is a top pick.

I dig these...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/18-Victor-Tu...99b862&vxp=mtr

But after reviewing a bunch of other posts I am left confused if they can be made to fit.

Diameter is okay, width I think is okay for the front but 11" in the rear would require body modification? Offset for the front needs to be at least 55mm on a '78 so a 10mm spacer is needed?

I might have to re-read all the stuff I found but my head is spinning with information overload.

I think I may subject myself to ridicule but I like the look of these...referred to as cookie cutters.

I can't seem to find any images of them mounted to a 928 though.

Anyone?

Not terribly expensive, not sure if they come in 16" or what the offset is either.

The problem with sticking to 16" wheels is the very small selection of tires that fit that wheel these days.

Search Tire Rack and you'll see what I mean.
