1988 Cassisrot S4 for sale... partial affiliation
I am acting as the RennList representative for this super rare colored, highly optioned S4.
The owner of this low mileage beauty is not on RennList, but is local to me -so I am helping out and giving him assistance: technically and otherwise.
This is currently listed on CL -but admittedly, the photos on there are poor cellphone quality, display the car dirty and lack the detail that my pictures here show.
I will be notating known issues with the car in posts as well as text on the photos...
Any questions that you have will be answered and offers may be submitted to me via PM, that I will relay to the seller.
Please refrain from pointing out the obvious things that keep this from being a Michael Wilhoit 'showroom ready' example.
It is what it is. It is not priced like a 'showroom ready' example either.
NADA retail places it in the $16.5k range with various background checks (ie. CarFax) placing it at $750 above retail in its' present condition. That amounts to $17.25k.
The owner is asking $12.5k: freeing up about $5k for the buyer to address the issues -but he is still willing to entertain offers.
Previously, he had to resort to selling off about 16 firearms from an extensive collection to get where he needed to be.
So, while he is in a better place financially now -he knows that his lack of storage capacity will ultimately hinder this car and wishes for it to go to a good home.
Preferably, a 928-savvy owner that will show this rare car the care and respect it warrants.
Here are some general pics to get started:

People have asked why do I give a damn about this car in the least?
Well, not only is it 1 of less than 30 928's painted in this color -I had previously seen it in person at 4 or 5 SITMs.
And, being only an hour away, I had to check it out for myself.
It turns out that it was stored in a garage when the daughter moved to DC -just not under a car cover or in a bubble.
Well, the car can't defend itself and the owner is not on RennList -so I took it upon myself to see exactly what is what.
The owner did take my recommendation to thoroughly clean the car...
So, I spent several days in 95+ degree heat checking out the car.
I have taken about 50 photos of the car and of any "issues" that the car may have.
I also had with me 2 other RennListers -one who owns 4 928's and the other that owns 2.
That way, you won't have to rely on my 'biased' opinion... I wasn't disappointed in the car at all.
Again, the owner is looking for the asking price of $12.5k...
Interested parties may PM me with offers that I will then forward to the seller.
Questions will be answered.
Offers will be considered by the seller.

It seems that these cars are represented as either Michael Wilhoit's 'time-capsule-perfect' cars or relegated to being parts cars. There is SOOO MUCH in between those two extremes.
This is one of those between the extremes... excellent condition (8.5/10), minor issues, desirable options, rare color -most don't know what to make of it or what it's worth.
When my car was new, it invoiced for just about $75k -with less options than this one... just as a perspective.

I have no dog in the hunt, but I live near the seller, and met Barry out there to look at it, and meet the seller.
The car was in great condition, I was surprised. The seller seemed very honest and forthcoming...
All in all, it was well sorted, and did not need very much.
It ran fantastic with the exception of the idle issue. I was quite impressed.
The motor was fairly clean, I noted a small pool of oil near the front right corner of the valley, but could not see where it came from.
I feel this car has a group of features, options, and documentation that you rarely find in this price range.
The roof is faded, and could use a respray, but it is still a head turner.
A little cash and a little work, and this car would be a stunner.
Just my impartial 2cents. I would buy from this guy.
He knows he has a nice car and does not want to give it away... Definitely a diamond in the rough.

On the roof blemish you point out, that's what happens when the clear coat starts to break down and fail.
Some of the other white spots on the roof and hatch are from the clear getting too thin and starting to break down.
To repair it, you would have to repaint those panels.
And since it looks like there's no other damage to the roof or hatch, you wouldn't even apply color to the edges of the panel.
It would be minimally invasive as far as any painting goes.

Far less than 1% of production during the 2 years it was offered ('87-'88).
R/F fender & Ft. bumper cover repainted due to 2nd owner... scrapes from a trailer.
Thank you Martin! More interior pics already posted and more pics:
IMHO it's a stunner, and would require not a whole lot of work to be spectacular.
I hope it finds a good home, a really good home.
And I am looking forward to more interior pics - if they are as good as the pics of the exterior Barry has taken they will likely sell the car!

If often requires way more effort to close the deal.
But that is where the really good deals will almost always be found.
AND that is what is now in place here...
An informed enthusiast is now involved, and providing assistance to the seller.
I predict that this car will now sell for over $10k...
Keep in mind though that there are truly very few "perfect" cars, perfect in the eyes of both the seller and any particular buyer. If the seller represents a car as "perfect", it's as it sat on the showroom floor. Perhaps a "Kermit" or a very low-mile carefully maintained example with some cosmetic restoration by Wilhoit would be as close to perfect as possible. Otherwise, cars are "perfect" considering the age and mileage, care and feeding, maintenance and modifications, normal wear and tear, storage conditions, and those qualifications create a huge grey area for interpretation.
No one is obligated to sell for less than they want despite a potential buyer's fixit list, and at the same time no one is obligated to buy for more than they want to pay if theyconsider that list too big for what they are getting. Worst case is that everyone walks away to sell or buy another day.

Just take a look at the 928s for sale in PCA's magazine Panorama... presently there is a $10k 1978 owner described "project" up to a $31.5k 1990 GT. And, we have all seen the $100+k GTS's for sale.
Filling in the blanks within the gray area will help all of us 928 owners in the long run... there are already signs that collectors are starting to appreciate the 928 for the technological & aesthetic marvel we have known it has been all along!

If I have a car priced fairly, I have no trouble upping my sales price by the amount the buyer wants to discount, so we can endup at what I originally considered a fair price.
I bought my car sight-unseen from a known seller's description. In spite of his description of the car as "perfect", I offered what I considered a fair price based on the condition of a few other 928's I'd seen while we worked on the sale. It turned out his was a lot closer to perfect than my expectation. So even though we had agreed on a price and a casheir's check had already been cashed, I had no trouble scribbling out a check for a couple $thou on top of that. The car was that nice.
My too sense.

(Dash & pod with cracks, but not warped -seems no 928 is immune with the large greenhouse window.
Simple expedient is to use a color-matched plastic dash cap...
until and at which time a Rob Budd or Paul Champagne interior is decided upon.
Wants vs. needs after all.)

Barry,
Good of you to take the time and effort to list this example for the owner. Seems to me it has potential to be a fair example needing some money to sort out cosmetically and doubtless another pot to sort out the inevitable list of deferred maintenance items.
The catalogue of cosmetic defects suggest to me the current/previous owners were not that fastidious about maintenance and thus probably not overly proactive with respect to mechanical maintenance so one can expect a pot of stuff that will needs resolution to bring it up to snuff. Nothing wrong with that - just the way it is and a primer as to what can be anticipated.
As long as there are no major mechanical defects potential owners should probably add a minimum of $6k to the ask and if one feels that is a fair price then by all means go for it.

But what about that idle issue? I think there was a transmission shifting issue as well. Were I in the market I'd be far more worried about those unknowns than the rather typical cosmetic defects that you've shown. Maybe they really are simple fixes, in which case the owner should get them corrected in order to get what the car is worth, no? My concern is that they might not be simple fixes. I am not expert enough to tell from the description that they are easily and cheaply corrected.

OK, it's Sunday afternoon and hotter than hell here in central VA (now FredR, be calm...) so instead of rewiring barn fans or working on my 928 brakes here I am on RL, giving the appearance to SWMBO that I am doing something worthwhile, but in reality I am pondering this thread for the n+1 time. I'll stick to my earlier observations about buyer and seller (which doctor bob amplified with great clarity), but now I am thinking like a salesman (which I was for 30 years) and the opportunity I see here is to have the TBF booger put to rest with a simple and inexpensive measurement of end play. If the test is negative (yep, seeing too many doctors), I would raise the damn price! (Yep, probably too many PBR's this afternoon - for hydration of course - as well.) If TBF is not in the picture, someone is going to end up with a prize, I think.

As stated prior, I also have had my hands on this car, and agree with Martin. Check tbf, if good, then there should be no issue....she runs fantastic with a little throttle, and sounds like a beast.....I want it...cant afford it....maybe I should sell my other house....hmmmm, no, wife would not be on board....anyway, its lovely.
