An old friend popped up at the last cars and coffee. He's good friends with the now former owner of this 78.
He took it on trade for a 1930 Buick back in 2012, always wanted a 928 and drove it regularly until the clutch started to drag last fall so he parked it. Buried in other projects (has two vintage Jags in the hopper) he hasn't had time to really dig into the 928. Rather than see it sit, he mentioned to our mutual friend he would like to find a good home for it.
So I broke every cardinal rule when buying a 928, no PPI or inspection of any kind. Heck, I didn't even start it up until after I handed over the money. Once and a while you have to trust your gut, your friends and a mans reputation.
I won't have time to really dig into this car for a few weeks. So far looking it over no real surprises. There were two dime size dark spots on the hood I noticed once I get her home. Paranoid it was a flaw in the paint or something worse....I took to my detailing supplies and attacked one of them. It came off and wow does this color shine!! I cannot wait to do a full detail.
So now she sits waiting for my hectic weekends to pass. First stop clutch-ville so I can drive it.
I'm the 4th or 5th owner, the car came with a lot of records I'm still paging through. It's a California car and made it's way to Wisconsin sometime in the late 90's.
for a long time just never crossed paths until now.
Parting words from the seller: "I know these cars are going up in value and this one is special. I know I'll regret not hanging onto it but I cannot just let it sit."
Spare tire is silver if that helps. I know some of them are red?

Glad it found the right home!

Oh - This is the one in Neenah that we PM'd about a bit.
I called the guy & talked with him.
Glad you got it and glad it's nicer than it sounded.

Had I known who this guy was, I would have been down there in a heartbeat last year.
The car is far from perfect, but just enough things are right it was worth snatching up, I think, ask me again in 6 months.....
I probably paid too much so I guess I'll switch to Old Style for a month!!!

I guess Erik was just teasing us...when he said he would post more pictures.

Looks like you are getting some great deals. Keep on collecting. It is always nice to see someone else buying a few more 928's

Sorry gang, #277 has been cocooned in my emptiest stall for now.
Too many other more urgent projects that use up the "shop" space and I won't have time to do anything with the 78 until late August at the earliest.
But....I did snap some shots before wrapping it in plastic and a car cover.

Thank you.
Don't you just love the texture of that leather interior and seats. My 84 doesn't compare, in my opinion. The 78 has that great grain to it and just sports a certain amount of depth absent in the 84.
Funny you mention cocooning yours, been thinking about doing the same too mine...and concentrating on dismantling the parts car. I'm hoping to learn a great deal about the workings on the interior mechanics during this process.
Looking forward to following your project when it begins.
Brian.

Brian - I love the texture too, but it is vinyl, not leather. For some reason, the seats from the factory with cloth inserts were mostly vinyl. I assume there are some with leather out there, but I have not seen an example.

Not to mention for some odd reason builders up here do not always put down a proper vapor barrier under their concrete. I suspect this with my 2nd garage.
The "cocooning" part I pull up the plastic and tape it to the car cover just to get it out of the way.
