Been out of sync for a few months...working 80 hrs a week is tough. Had a little break, and spent a day tracing everything I could possibly trace...had that same looping as when I bought it, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, for about a minute....then smooth out and idle perfectly. Give it some gas, it shudders, and shuts off. Starts right back up, idles fine. Give it half pedal and hold, and it loops again, but at high rpm, let off the pedal, and perfect idle.

I have gone through and repaired the entire vacuum system, the entire fuel system, and all ne'er hood electrics....

In my frustration, I thought, maybe...the PO wired the plugs wrong, so I traced all those out...dang it, all good....

So I am staring at the distributor cap, and it hits me...THE DISTRIBUTOR!

I loosened the adjustment bolt and went clockwise...spit and sputter...went counter clockwise, and omg...idled stronger....adjusted idle screw and distributor, until I am running at app 800 RPM. Takes throttle, runs great, with exception of a small backfire at higher Rpms.
The distributor is almost at full adjustment. I have determined that either the timing was set wrong by one of the PO's and that is why it was parked, or it has jumped time, and that's why it sat.
Next up...going to do the TB and WP.

Stay tuned

It sounds to me they took the distributor off and then put it in 1 tooth off. Great work on tracking it down.

Thank you both. It took some time, but in the end, it seemed so obvious! I thought about the distributor being removed, but I think tb skip might be more likely...I have many receipts from the original owner, and none for tb. It was parked when the PO bought it, and had the running issues at that time...my guess is, it was driven daily until the belt skipped, he took it in, it was too expensive, and he gave up and parked it....my theory anyway.

No problems in Charlotte area with the rain, just tired of it...the big damage was 2 hrs south of me.

Small victories....got the front ball cup installed....gave up after 8 hours last weekend. Took it only 30 mins to pop into place today. Reinstalled the exhaust heat shield. Now to check the timing and the plugs. Probably change the oil too. I do believe it has jumped time tho....

We will see....

Isn't that strange? Take a break and a new look and things are suddenly easier? Congrats on getting that back on!

I have been at work non stop for months it seems.....finally got to play with the 82 a little bit. Got her running. I am positive she has jumped time, or has been timed incorrectly. The best I can get out of her is about 28 deg btdc...the book calls for 23 deg btdc...I definitely need to do TB and WP....but still had some fun today!

I am glad that you got some time out in the shop. Those parts bills are a little easier to swallow with all of that extra work, lol.

Yea, so far I have had most parts....to this point anyway. WP and tb are next.....probably gonna go the China route, just for the heck of it.

I am hoping to drive this one to SITM.....even though she needs paint and interior work, mechanicals should be complete by then.

Ok, playing a bit, set engine to tdc on #1, removed the distributor cap, and saw that the rotor was pointing dead on #1....unbolted the distributor, pulled it out, and rotated it 1 gear/ tooth before #1. Reinserted, snugged it down dead center of adjustment. Put everything back together, (both vacuum lines disconnected from distributor and plugged). Cranked her and she started up, would idle about 200 rpm, and cut off. Opened up the idle screw, and she fired righ up, app 2000 rpm. Got assistance from my youngest, and she held it at 3000 for me, while I set it dead on 23deg using the timing light. Once she let go of the throttle, I adjusted the idle screw down until she was app 800 rpm. Cut her off, removed the timing light, hooked the vacuum advance lines back up, and cranked her, she fired and cut right off. I disconnected and plugged the vacuum advance lines, and she started right up, running fine with a slight miss.

What gives? Why are the vacuum advance lines hooked up causing this grief? Any ideas?

Well, got some time in the shop yesterday, re-routed the vacuum lines again, pretty sure they are in the right spot this time. Still won't run with vacuum advance hooked up. Idles perfect and revs just fine with it plugged. Took her out for a drive, and still dies when I give her a bunch of pedal. I'll start a thread...

I was able to install the short shift kit I got from Ed. It's so easy. I now have this kit on both of the 928s.
