Default 928 - 988 = Mercedes Benz AMG GT

Mercedes Benz AMG GT

Anyone else see the SB commercial for this and think the same thing?

Yeah, saw the ad during superbowl. I immediately identified it with the 928, especially the treatment of the rear lights.

No, Aston Martin did that a decade ago.

This looks like a Jaguar mated with a 991. Nothing about the shape of this car looks 928 to me.

Does it have a rear mounted transaxle?

Agreed. Actually looks more Italian, to me than German. 2c.

I agree with Hacker. It looks like it has been inspired by the F-Type. Not nearly as good looking as the Jag though (which is easily the best looking sports car on the market right now, imho).

One wonders what's changed in the market. Couldn't sell enough 928s to justify development and production. Now the top of the same market is stuffed with similar GTs. Anybody made the trip to the Benz store to place their order?

Maybe change the thread title to "MB, the latest automaker to beat Porsche getting the new 928 to market".

When/if Porsche ever decides to do this, they better get it right.

The front of the AMG GT looks like a Mercedes, and the rear looks like a 911... (You have to see it in the flesh, pictures don't do it justice)

It does not look anything like a 928 in person, I saw them in person at Laguna last fall when they were having press introductions for the U.S. market.. The motor is supposed to be good for 600+ hp in testing, but de tuned for street work.

The AM V8 vantage is closer to a 928 than the MB, and yes it has a transaxle like the 928..

The AM Vantage V12 and V12S are monsters... Debating one for the next stable pet.....

Blame Porsche marketing.

Mercedes, BMW, and Jaguar had no problem selling their front engine GT's during the same era.

Porsche needs to grow a pair and copy Piranha Brothers platform. Then they'll have made some progress and a statement.

Very interesting car with the front mid-engine design....nice little 4 liter V-8 set way back and a "reasonable" price tag. Weird thing is the exhaust ports face into the V of the V-8and the intakes are outboard so can cook your breakfast on the hood ???

I'd blame the engineers and the accountants.

By the end, the basic design was over 20 years old.

The engine had been updated, so had the brakes and suspension, but many seem to think that the engine updates made the 5.4 worse. They certainly didn't address all the oiling issues.

And there was nothing they could do to take advantage of the huge advances in tire technology.

It would have taken a very serious and involved 'makeover' to make the 928 viable after 95 (probably after 91).
And there was no way Porsche was going to make that investment at that time.
